Didn't understand the ending

*Spoilers*

I really didn't understand the ending. Anyone else?

They didn't show them 'discovering' they had been robbed of 100k. They just let the woman rip them off and that was it. (And with Brexit happening I thought that was quite ironic)

And they didn't show what happened to Spud and Sickboy. Like in T1 we saw the reaction of Begbie after being ripped off. But we didn't see the reaction of Sickboy and Renton to being ripped off.

Sorry but is there something I'm missing here ?! Sorry but the ending really made me torn on the film, I'm not sure if the ending let it down a bit. But I also hope on time, I'll realise how good it is.

yeah it was messy but they left it open for a trainspotting 3

In T1 Renton benefitted from ripping his friends off. But in T2 I can't see how Spud has benefitted at all. He has just ripped his friends off seemingly for no reason.

Also at the end Spud and Sick Boy just disappear into thin air. I just don't get it.

I hope in time maybe it will be some message like "Spud was showing his friends crime has caused all this trouble and they're better off without it". I think I'm gonna need to watch it a 2nd time

Spud knew that Mark and Simon would try to rip each other off over the 100k...that's what the whole "First, there is an opportunity, and then there is a betrayal" was about.

Spud by giving the money to Veronika saved the Renton/Sickboy friendship.

That was kinda the whole point of the film?

Spud initially won't help Veronika precisely because there's no gain for him to offset betraying his mates - he won't accept money for himself because he knows from experience he'll just blow it on drugs. Veronika finally persuades him by offering to give his cut directly to Gail and his son.

Sick Boy still has the pub, and he's regained his best mate Renton.
Of the four friends, Spud is the big winner. The ending not only implies a rapprochement with Gail, but in a massive "fourth wall" breach it also implies that Spud is the author of "Trainspotting".

Yeah after thinking about it.. I came to the conclusion that Spud realised his friends were only going to spend the 100k on drugs and kill themselves (he's already layed flowers for one deceased friend in the film). After he went through the struggles to become clean himself.

And I think he thought he could help a woman with a young child. So he just decided the best thing to do was give the money away.

Tho I still don't understand why they didn't show Renton and sick boy discovering the theft.

I think we did...Sickboy said to Renton something like "I don't understand how she managed to do it?". They didn't seem too bothered...they were too busy being pals.

She made Spud believe in himself - her telling him to write was what ultimately helped him overcome his drug habit, so him getting her the money was his way of paying her back.

Also, she did promise to send some money back to Spud's girlfriend and son (if we believe her) which was all he really wanted - a way to get his son back in his life.

That and seeing Renton & Sickboy back to being mates. So yeah, well done Spud, you came good all round!

Renton told Spud to find something to do for addiction-Spud found writing.
It may also pave the way for Spud to have some sort of relationship with Gail and his son.
Veronika went home to her son (with 100K)
Renton is home
Sick boy is "as is" and still has the pub
They are still friends (which they wouldn't be if either of them had the 100K

Begbie back inside

I thought the ending missed a trick and I was waiting for something else, not sure what, just something else?

That said I thought the ending told the story, you just have to piece it together.

If Veronika hadn't taken the money Mark and Simon probably would have gotten readdicted and ODed since they would have had a steady money for junk. They shoot up after laying flowers for Tommy and Mark reminding Simon about the baby. They are literally each other best friends and worse enemies since they get drawn to heroin when back together. My interpretation/ understanding.
