Poignant moment with Diane

In the brief scene when Renton is gazing up at her through the window of her glass office. I thought the staging was very clever; Renton alone and fittingly both beneath her and in the street, while Diane is oblivious and getting on with her life. It serves as some well crafted cinematic shorthand that basically sums up their relationship and the power dynamic between them in both films.

There's a deleted scene from Trainspotting which mirrors this moment — Renton is talking to her at the side of a football pitch after returning for Tommy's funeral. He asks if she wants to come away with him after the skag deal and she shoots him down, announcing that she has a boyfriend. In a nice symbolic touch there is a chain link fence between them during this conversation. Of course whenever he actually wants her she is out of reach.

Yes, I was wondering what he was feeling when he was looking up at her from outside. Nostalgia? Does he still have feelings for her? Shame she didn't get more screen time.

Doesn't Renton get with her in the book of Porno?

reply

Yes he does in the book

It's been a while since I read the book (of Trainspotting at least) but I have a vague memory of 'book Diane' being less acerbic than in the films? It'd be nice to see them eventually end up together but would maybe seem a bit too perfect. That being said, I'd probably watch two hours of Kelly Macdonald just reading the phone book, so was hoping she'd have more screen time.

I was surprised the film didn't feature her more. Maybe to give more focus to Veronika as a lead? The trailer was clever in suggesting they were all back together (or was I imagining it being Diane in the car)
