How come the Police never went after Begbie? SPOILERS

He escaped and went straight home. Yet no police ever showed up trying to find him

That was my only gripe with this movie

reply

Yeah that was pretty weird, it's not like he did a quick house visit either.

reply

It was hinted at that they were at the front of the house and that's why he was sneaking in through the back window.

reply

Nor did they bother checking if he had made contact with any of his old criminal buddies.

reply

Because the film was sloppily written.

I enjoyed it as a nostalgia-fest; but it was sloppily written.

reply

The would undoubtedly have been looking for him, but it was incidental to the storyline of the move. The labdicks probably wouldn't even have known Renton was back in the country and Sickboy had apparently never been convicted of any offence so they might not have been aware they even knew Begbie, let alone had any current information on his whereabouts. His escape would also have been all over the TV and newspapers, so it seems an oversight in the movie that this wasn't at least touched on.

I don't think his picture would have been all that exposed in terms of media. Prison breaks aren't as rare in the UK as you'd expect, absconding from open prisons are really common, so unless the prisoner is really notorious or the break out method ingenious it's not likely to be front page news and a story that would fairly quickly be forgotten.

Maybe I just don't have much faith in the police or general public but I feel the police would go straight to family and known associates, probably sit on the family for a month tops then probably have to scale back the surveillance and just semi regularly check in. Likewise, there might be a few weeks he'd be recognised on the streets but then everyone would probably forget, I doubt there's many people that would recognise Scotland's top 10 most wanted and Begbie was only in for armed robbery I think, so though not someone you'd want to meet isn't dangerous enough to stay in the public consciousness for very long.

reply

Did ye watch the movie? One of the first things the wife says is the police are out front and he replies that's why I'm coming in a back window.

reply

Yes, which is why I talk long term about how the police would watch the house for a few weeks then become less attentive and most of the general public would forget about the prison break story if they even heard of it in the first place.

The movie seems to take place over a few months if not longer.

reply

Wow, some people really do have no faith in the police, talk about incompetent. Police on watch, ah no bother I'll just come thru the back window.

reply

Begbie was only in for armed robbery I think

At the beginning of the movie he's being told he's been turned down for release after twenty years in prison. He also says his lawyer should have remembered to mention diminished responsibility at the hearing. Based on this he's almost certainly doing a life sentence for murder. His escape would be all over the Scottish media for a few days at least.

reply

Yeah, I wasn't clear on why he was in prison, but twenty years and the use of the words "diminished responsibility" certainly suggests murder. Twenty years is too long for manslaughter. I'd have thought in such circumstances there'd be a very active manhunt, but I don't know.

 If at first you don't succeed, you're not Chuck Norris

reply

I'd imagine his behaviour in prison probably extended his sentence far beyond the original stretch

reply

UK police has more important things to do nowadays, like fining people for twitter messages.

reply

Okay, now remind me, which one is Begbie?
