Chekov, or Dostoevsky?
The credits say the film is based on stories by Chekhov, and that may well be, but the sub-plot about Ismail, his rock-throwing son Illya, and the destruction of the money is taken right out of a subplot in Dostoevesky's Brothers Karamazov. Beautifully adapted too, I thought, and perfectly integrated with the larger story and its themes.
