A travesty and disappointment

The original Sinister movie was menacingly nuanced, and that made the experience of watching it creepy. More was felt than seen. The threat was in shadow and mysterious, and that made the atmosphere and the ending dreadful.

In Sinister 2, there is no subtlety. It is all out there in your face. The children, the films, the family drama; along with musical and stylistic pastiches ripped from the first movie. The acting on the part of the adults is pretty good, but the cheesy kids seem like something out of Peter Pan. They talk too much, they reveal too much, and very little feels menacing. A family drama with supernatural kiddies; we are even treated to a borderline romance and a "hero saves the day" ending.

I loved the first movie and really wanted to like this one, but it was just common.

Well, I thought the first one was problematic. It mainly relied on overly dark lighting (didn't anyone turn on their lights?) and jump scares with children in bad makeup.

Baghoul was good. I thought it was a good take on the boogey man.

This film is not horror. They knew they couldn't top whatever was good in the first, so they went in a different direction. This film was more a psychological thriller than horror. In many cases, it worked better than the original.

This. There can be no mysterious atmosphere now that that demon was explained at the end of the first film.

First one was seriously scary and creepy. It also had Ethan Hawke who can act. The 2nd one had horrible (I mean this in every sense of the word) acting. The scary videos weren't even that bad and the movie was a huge dissapointed. I should have expected this going in to the theaters months ago. I watched it a second time just an hour ago and it was even worse . These sequels always sucker us in, and just plain suck badly. Horror sequels are always quick cash grabs. Not even meant to be as good as the originals. I think it's the horror formula, especially these days.

I just finished the film and I am surprised by all the hate. It was as good as the first I thought and certainly had a better ending, not that an ideal ending is always needed.
