The only way a sequel would work is if it's a SWAT team
Heavily Police based. Typical route for a sequel, but would be fun.
Maybe the Washington parents can make an appearance.

I don't know I mean you can get an ending where people don't check out the mine
shareEh just change the settings, monsters, plot, etc. This isn't the first time a game like Until Dawn has been done. The graphics/acting was amazing, but give me a break. The plot was cool, but I wasn't like, "OOOOMGFFFFFF THIS HAS NEVER BEEN DONE IN CINEMATIC VIDEO GAME HISTORY!"
Change the scenery (resort/island perhaps?), change the plot, change the antagonist(s)/characters (which the devs already said they'd do if a sequel or basically #2 was made) and be done with it.
I will say while the Wendigos are nothing new (several movies have been released on the creature), I can honestly say THIS video game plot and the cut scenes were better than any of the movies I've seen on the creature/myth lol. So that is something, but there's plenty of mythological creatures you can pull from. I haven't seen a good big food/squatch/abominable movie either. Abominable (with guy in wheelchair) was pretty good, but meh. Still not something on par with Until Dawn.
Most of Until Dawn took place in a lodge/cave/asylum setting. Setting a game in a FOREST as the main area with possible sawmills etc. is also VERY creepy. In fact quite a few scare games have been set in forest settings and I can't really say that was the case for Until Dawn. Most of the huge scares came in the caves/lodge/asylum... a COUPLE outside, but not in the way I'd depict a forest.
If the game took a non trail path where you were out camping in the forest with more open ended noises, 360 degree visuals and a LITTLE more open ended pathing, block it with fences/barb if you get too far in) compared to a VERY linear system in Until Dawn #1... I'd be freaked out as F.
Tropical resort (easy to add in tropical storm) also very much sticks with the genre.
They could do a sequel with the rescue team you see in Josh's bonus scene or a prequel with the miners and/or the stranger, but I prefer they just do a completely new story with a new location.
shareI don't think a direct sequel would be a good idea.
As others have said, the story isn't so unique that it needs continuing in the first place. It would also be very difficult to not have the sequel ruin the multiple-choice element of the first game.
Furthermore, a number of people -- myself included -- were underwhelmed by the supernatural final third of Until Dawn and would probably prefer it if any sequel, spiritual or direct, went in another direction.
Finally, about your SWAT team idea -- I'm not sure it would play to the game's strengths if the protagonists were trained and combat-ready. I found some of the action (which, in terms of gameplay, consisted mainly of Quick Time Events) to be the weakest part of Until Dawn.
Basically, I would prefer the sequel to Until Dawn to tell a story that's the best possible fit for this kind of gameplay, and, not that I'm saying this is necessarily what you meant, but I don't think a story with guns and a greater amount of combat would be ideal.
