Is it possible for all the characters to survive?

Or some of them have to die in order to get to the end?

It is possible for them all to survive, yes.

Whoever invented ignore lists is an unsung genius.

Yes, they can all survive. You have probably already figured it out, but here is a list of tips if you need it:

1. To save Jess - As Mike, choose all risky/quick choices and don't fail any QTE's during the chase scene. If Jess survives Ch 4, make sure you don't leave her behind the mines in Ch 9 (you will be playing Matt). Always choose the hide options and hide together. Don't fail the QTE when hiding, or they will both die.

2. To save Matt and Emily - As Emily, keep the flare gun and don't shoot it off. As Matt, don't try to save Emily and jump to safety instead. Matt can also survive if he tries to save Emily if he has the flare gun, but it is more difficult and Emily won't have it for Chapter 8. Giving Emily the flare gun and jumping to safety is easier. Don't attack the elk as Matt and again don't fail any QTE's in the mines with Jess. Don't fail any QTE's with Emily in the mines and shoot the wendigo with the flare gun to avoid getting bitten. If Emily does get bitten, don't shoot her. The bite is harmless.

3. To save Chris and Ashley - DON'T SHOOT ASHLEY when you get the option to choose who to shoot in chapter 6 or 7. Either shoot Chris or don't do anything. If you try to shoot Ashley, Chris will die. During the Chapter 8 wendigo scene, you must successfully shoot all the wendigos as Chris. You don't get any second chances in this scene. One miss, and Chris dies. As Ashley, do not investigate the suspicious noise in Chapter 9.

4. To save everyone in the finale - you must successfully pass all "don't moves" with Sam for everyone to survive. It is more difficult than it seems. Keeping choosing the "hide" option until you see everyone leave the house. If you run too early, anyone still in the house will die. Mike is the last one to leave. After you see him leave, run for the switch.

5. To save Josh - You must find the tattoo card (make sure you read the back of it) in Chapter 5 AND Hannah's diary in Chapter 10 (read all the pages.) Both are played by Sam. The diary is located in the room with the water. Do not open the door to exit that room until you find the diary. You can't go back after the door is open. Just to let you know, there is no way to really save Josh. He either dies or becomes a wendigo. Personally, I think a better ending for him is death considering the alternative.]

Thanks for the spoiler tags. I could so easily look, but I will not. I will resist.

See I figure different play throughs I do will go very differently, as first I did what I would do, so next I plan to do the exact opposite of what I would do. Then, by this point knowing the characters better, I will play in character. Each character does what they would do.

So that should get me a nice array of results.

There are trophies on ps4 for all living, only boys living, only girls living, and no one living. Its all up to the decisions you make

I've played through the game twice so far. First time I got out with only Matt and Jessica dying. Second time I got them all out alive. Josh technically suffering a far worse fate than dying.

My next playthrough I'm going to get them all killed as quick as possible lol

Though hard to win an argument with a smart person. It's impossible to win an argument with an idiot

First time I played only Emily and Sam survived and now I'm and trying to save all last scene all were alive and then as Sam I killed mike and Emily lol I was pissed off. As Emily I have the flare gun to matt but still matt and Emily both survived till Emily died in last scene and as matt I attacked the deer and fall off the cliff but managed to hang on and Emily helped him up. I love this game still haven't found all clues and totems though
