Series finale (Spoiler)

D'artagnan went hard AF. Total beast mode. I'd say that as a series it was average. At times it was really good and sometimes it was really bad. The series finale was pretty great though. I'll give them that.

After having to endure so many bad finales over the last few years - I think of all the great series like Lost, Dexter, True Blood, Weeds, and finally Castle this year - terrible finales after their long series runs were so good!

Musketeers finale was very good - all happy endings and quite complete. They had time to think, plan, and write out the finale as a "true" finale. All the 4 Musketeers move on in their lives and their stories are more or less complete.

Since the real life d'Artagnan went on to serve King Louis: the Sun King ( the dauphin ) as Captain and died in battle, there's probably milliege left in his character because his journey as 'Captain of the Musketeers' is only just begining. Plus it was dissapointing not to see him become a father, especially as he was the only one of the Musketeers to openly state on screen that he wanted to become a father and the only one to be married.

I can't see the show coming back as a series but I think it's possible that it might come back as a one-off two hour story

^This. I loved the ending because it was well-deserved, especially for Athos who seemed the most closed off and guarded. It was also great to see Porthos have a wife and child along with Aremis genuinely smiling for the first time in a while since his son was born. It was gracious and sweet of Anne to go against Louie's anger, because he did treat her so badly and was a horrible hypocrite who even to the grave was still vindictive, in allowing Aremis a role in his son's life as well as Anne finally appearing truly happy.

A great end to a great series and I will truly miss it.

Am I the only one, who disliked the finale? For me it was mostly cringeworthy and the end was way too kitschy. They should have toned it a bit down and/or leave some lose ends, even though it was the last season. And why did they bring back Mylady de Winter? Did she serve any purpose except for the killing, which could have done by any other character?

I thought the final was OK but didn't love it.

I thought the Queen creating "the people's Musketeers" was too sugary, Aramis being made a minister when he's always been about excitement and adventure too conveniant ( to be closer to his son ) and d'Artagnan's rise to Captain too low key ( which is a criticism aimed at the whole series for me).

I was fine with Athos finding love again but did think the pregnancy should have been given to Constance

reply

I completely agree with everything you said: Aramis becoming a minister to be close to his son was waaay too convenient and didn't fit his character at all.
The same with d'Artagnan becoming the Captain. I would have given that job to either Porthos or Aramis, but not the youngest one of the group.
Yeah and I also would have given the pregnancy to Constance. I thought that the love story between Silvie and Arthos went a little bit to quick after him being always so reserved and withdrawn, because of his history with Mylady. And the clichèd story of taking the pregnant lover hostage, and only letting Arthos know that he becomes a father right at the exchange, made me roll my eyes excessively. But at least I found it believeable that he would quit the musketeers after all that.

Considering that d'Artagnan eventually became Captain in both Dumas's books and real life, I wouldn't have minded him becoming Captain at the end of S3 had more focus been given to it but overall, S3 seemed to be more about Athos's journey to stepping down than d'Artagnan's journey to stepping up and that's why there wasn't enough build up to it.

Aramis wasn't suitable Captain materiel - too reckless - but Porthos might have been. As others have said, Aramis was more of a good back-up man than leader.

No, you're not alone. I'm glad they were able to finish it off, but if was way too sugary. I'll miss this series.

reply

Yeah me too. As much as I didn't like the last season, I wished there would have been one or to more seasons. I especially liked the chemistry between the 4 main actors and will be sad not to see them acting together anymore.
