Ep6. What The Hell Happenend???

The whole episode was incredible. It was exciiting, well paced, excellent hammy acting, great production values and special effects.
Then all of a sudden, it completely crashed at the 37 minute mark. Too much emotional talk at the end. It was completely unnecessary. It just didn't work. When the aliens flew away, they should have just cracked a couple jokes about shooting each other. Then roll credits.
Wow. that was really weird.

They went for a PC Next Generation style ending. I got worried about this series when they arbitrarily decided TOS needed a ship's counselor.

I think these guys are doing a great job recreating the look and feel of the show, but boy do they need better stories.

The story was great for TOS. The monster was well executed also. It was just the last 8 minutes of solid, boring dialog

reply

It wasn't done on purpose - the episode was running too short, so they went back and filmed an extra epilogue to pad it out for running time. By then, it was probably too late to add to earlier spots in the episode.

I would have made it more of a quest to find out where the thing came from, and had the energy ripples of telepathic anger from the Father attack them as they approached the comet cloud, or some variation of that. His disobedience could have been exploring or contacting outsiders. Curiosity.

Dialog is boring? Everything doesn't need to be pew pew pew - show over!

Squire of Gothos? I liked it -especially when they set us up with the Lexington disaster (not canon?) And everyone getting decked at one point or another by a friend - but I also thought the ending misfired. It should have ended with Kirk's misgivings, which would have been rare in TOS I know but more powerful because of that. The ensign's backstory could easily have been slipped in earlier when she refused her female shipmates' invitation for drinks.

It just felt way too touchy-feely to me. Save it for TNG Continues.

You'll hate ep7 " embracing the winds". zzzzzzzzzz

As others mentioned, a couple of jokes would not have been long enough at the 34 minute mark to get to the 42 minute run time.
What to do? More dialogue made sense considering the limited budget of a fan made series.
Who should do the talking?
The script had Ensign Eliza Taylor (played by Gigi Edgley) communicate with the creature's father.

That would be an unusual choice for TOS where Shatner/Kirk and Spock/McCoy almost always dominated the end of episodes.
- But I think that the script made the right decision dramatically to have Ensign Taylor do the final dialogue.
The creature's son had chosen Taylor because only she was able to resist the shock waves and be sympathetic while the rest of the crew became violently out of control.

I don't think it was a politically correct move. Because this series does not star Shatner who was notorious for taking other cast member's lines. So, with ST Continues it's possible for other crew members to take center stage at the end of an episode.
Does that feel more like TNG? I guess.
But that kind of ending fit this story better instead of Kirk completely taking over.
Instead of just doing a repeat of "Devil in the Dark", ST Continues did a different story on the rock creature idea.
It worked for me.

Dunno. This series is starting to develop a touchy-feely-ness about it that does not serve it well.

And at some point, we do need Kirk to save the day, right?

I donno either bjlevine.
Do we always need Kirk to save the day?
Sometimes in 3rd season TOS or ST:TMP or in ST V; I wondered; does Shatner always need to dominate things?

One of my favorite episodes is "All Our Yesterdays" where Kirk is not central to much of the story.
- I'm not advocating that Kirk be killed which Rick Berman did.
All I'm saying is that sometimes I think it's OK for Kirk to take a back seat in a ST story.

I didn't say always. I'm just seeing a bit too much TNG feel about this production. And frankly, my favorite TNG episodes are where Picard does save the day (think Darmok).

Shaka, when the walls fell.

I understand.
For the future it's moot considering the "Star Trek: Axanar," lawsuit and the fallout from that.
But as for Star Trek stories, I like captain dominated ones like Darmok.
But I also enjoy ensemble episodes like Yesterday's Enterprise.
