Pilgrim of Eternity

Nicely done.

I especially loved how the episode touched on the fact that Apollo loved Humanity more than any other god in the pantheon, our 'champion' as it were.
In addition I liked Apollo finding the film of the Apollo 8 liftoff..."I'm pleased to see that I was remembered."
Jamie Bamber in a cameo was a nice touch. I was like "I KNOW that face."
...and finally that wonderful ending. Very TOS.

More like very "Monster, Inc.". I thought it was well done, but just too happy at the end.

One thing I loved about TOS is that they were not afraid to have a downer ending, and Who Mourns for Adonais is exactly that. The ending here is just a little too saccharin.

"Oh no...they sent the wrong Spock!"

I just watched POE for the first time last night.I was totally impressed with both the superb production values,as well as the poignant script.Wonderful to see Michael Forest return as a very different Apollo. Michele Specht shone in her part of Dr.Elise McKennah,& Jimmy Doohan can be looking down & proud of his son Chris as he recreates his dad's famous role on Star Trek.I hope to view many more episodes of this quality show.

If you want more episodes from a quality show, you need not look any furthur than Star Trek-Phase 2.

Word, powersroc!

Next one is due in just a few weeks, wonder if they'll get another TOS guest star?

IMDB's "ignore user" button = priceless :)

There are a lot of things to like about this episode;
- The ST original series actor, Michael Forest, who played Apollo was in it.
- Vic Mignogna is solid as Kirk.
- The production values are decent and the story pretty much worked.

But I'm glad I saw "Lolani" before this because there were moments when Pilgrim of Eternity was barely watchable. Why?

1. Wigs. Realism with a wig is crucial. I noticed the wigs at the first appearance of Apollo and Athena.
I figured I'd get used to this limitation.
But the director/producers made a poor decision imo.
- Apollo's wig would be taken off when he was nicer or weaker and then put back on when he was stronger.
* This called attention to the fact that Michael Forest was wearing a wig.
Bad idea. It didn't look that realistic in the first place but you don't want that fact shouted out to the audience.

2. Michael Forest singing? He is not very good.
Uhura singing fits TOS. And Kim Stinger has the talent to pull that off.
Apollo making speeches made sense imo.
But Apollo singing did not work.

3. The McCoy character had a lot of screen time in this episode but Larry Nemecek just can't carry those scenes.
It was painful trying to create the big 3 of Kirk, Spock and McCoy with that actor.
Frankly, I'd give more screen time to Chris Doohan.

* Anyway, I'm sticking with the series and will watch episode 3.

BB ;-)

it's just in my opinion - imo -

Just watched this episode / series for the first time myself and completely agree with your points, in particular with Larry Nemecek as McCoy; I'd hate to speak ill of someone doing something that is clearly a work of passion but he just fails to evoke what made Leonard McCoy the uh...real McCoy.

My biggest issue with this episode though is how unrelated the plot points were; the unknown substance of the Realm affecting the ship and the parallel Apollo plot had hardly any bearing on each other. Each issue is resolved independently of the other and this, I feel, is a structural problem with the story. There's no real sense of tension.

The script feels like it was a few revisions short of a final draft. I would have spent less time on introductions and set up and directly tied the realm substance's effect on the ship alongside Apollo's uncontrollable behavior. Having an emergency situation externally while a powerful being wreaks havoc internally would have added some much needed oomph to the episode.

Still, for a first episode it's pretty good and having the original actor that played Apollo was a great coup for this series. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Nemecek was filling in because the regular actor couldn't do the first 2 shoots - check out the 3rd episode, or the vignette "Happy Birthday Scotty" to see someone who's a bit more like the real McCoy. ;)

I just now found STC and watched the first episode. Agree with you about the wigs and hairstyling. Gotta do better. Some of the costumes didn't fit too well, either, especially "Nurse Temple."

Apollo's singing, I thought, was supposed to sound somewhat weak since at that time he was still trying to dupe the humans. Just another way to look at it. Forest did such a great job with the part, and it was so cool to see him here again! that I'd forgive him just about anything. (He's a big dude, isn't he?)

The acting is definitely the weakest link. By all means, use the guest stars and Chris Doohan as much as possible. But this was just the first ep so it could get better.

Like you, I'm sticking with it! The sets and SFX are drop-dead beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

He wasn't trying to dupe anyone.... he had the best intentions for once, and was honestly powered down at that moment, until performing brought him praise and with it power.

Is this weird to you guys? OK, I was randomly page hopping, and saw a video about the moon landing... it made me remember this line with Apollo, and the mental reply of it was Shatner, and I had to actually sit and think for a minute if it was from the original episode, but Apollo wasn't on board in that episode, and it hit me that i had conflated the two mentally, my mind superimposing Shatner over Vic in my memory.

STC is that good and memorable. My mind can't distinguish it from canon TOS any further.

It was cool that the actress who played Athena in the beginning was actually Mrs. Forest. A really nice touch.

Liked it quite a bit.
Wondered if the crewman really had to die -- could they have sent a shuttle after him?

As a bottle show it felt kind of claustrophobic -- so much time in sickbay, and so little going on. Felt like the overall story needed more "beats", i.e. new developments that Kirk and the crew had to deal with.

At times the tone seemed off, e.g. Kirk seemed a jerk for interrupting the retelling of the Iliad for no apparent reason.

Some of the dialog seemed off as well. For example, Kirk's response to Scottie planning the EMP.

And when did Kirk ever ask for consensus? His MO is to collect data and then just do whatever he thinks best.

I don't see Kirk having the authority to just dump a super-intelligent character on an unsuspecting planet without someone bringing up the Prime Directive. I'm pretty sure he should have referred it to Federation authorities.

Apollo's newly-found power didn't seem to make a great deal of sense, and seemed to easy a solution.

But are these really major complaints? Not so much. Overall it was so great to see a new TOS episode! I rated it a 9/10.

By the way, the science felt mostly good and only a minimum of techno-babble! Maybe Grant Imehara helped ensure that.

It was fun to recognize Marina Sirtis's voice there as well! I'd had no idea in advance. Or about Michael Forest. These were like easter eggs!
