I grew up on the beach in this movie (which is actually two seperate beaches) and was thrilled to see it as one of my in-flight options on my return from a Christmas holiday visiting the family who still live there. Loved the movie and it was an incredibly bittersweet moment to watch Billy Connelly, one of my favourite all-time comedians, 'die' on the beach that is so dear to me.

The footage is gorgeous and the story is entertaining, if a bit random in places. Curious to know where the big pink house is if anyone knows?

I thought I recognised it, too, bit I'm not sure - is it a bit south of Mallaig?

reply

No, not Mallaig. It's Red Point Beach south of Gairloch.

Most of the film is shot on the long narrow beach on the far side of the peninsula (you can't drive to it, but there's a track through the farm, which then continues on as a walking path to the (former) Craig Hostel and on to Lower Diabaig. Well worth doing if you like coastal walks.

A small part of the film towards the end is shot on the larger 'main beach' that is more accessible from the car park, although it still requires a walk through some steep dunes. In real life these beaches are a different colour - the larger beach is much redder and the long beach is much paler.

I think most of the aerial footage is from near Achiltiebuie, further north, near Lochinver. Still don't know where the house is!
