Why doesn't anyone just shoot him?

When Delarue was shooting people in the town, and they all just stood there... what the hell? They've all got guns, all it would take is one bullet to the head and he's gone forever. Instead we're supposed to believe that people would just hand over their family members to get brutally murdered by this idiot?

Sod that. If I were there I'd definitely shoot this prick, especially if it was one of my family members who was handed over to him. There's no way in hell I'd just let that idiot kill someone I love.

The whole lot of that town deserve to get killed, bunch of cowards. The only one of them with any balls was the 16 year old kid, who died fighting them.

Terrible things, Lawrence. You've done terrible things!

Sure, but kill the boss and what will the men do?

Would you hand your nan over to save your own skin? Or would you be up on the roof with a rifle aimed at this a$$hole?

They might shoot up the whole town.

A coward would hand over his nanny. Parents sometimes sell or eat their own children in times of great peril. Likely these people are friendly settlers who were under protection by the colonel from the Indians. But after he had killed all of them his mind had been twisted and he was holding the entire town hostage. While armed, these people are farmers, settlers. Having a gun doesn't suddenly make you a tough guy. Many trained soldiers are found dead without having fired their weapon. They are simply not natural killers.

Normally a town like that would have its share of tough guys taking up the sheriff and deputies posts, but in this case that is Delarue and he has turned on them.

Don't know if that is historical, but it seems plausible enough. I think it helps make the point come across. That the wild west ended when big oil and other corporations came in to "civilize" the place, and the methods and men they employed. That part is fairly accurate. All out gangster warlords like Delarue, civil war, army veterans and criminals were exactly the type of people employed by high finance to make way for hostile takeovers of land and property.

reply

Well this idea has been done before in many western movies. Usually it's the rich guy buying up all the land in the town, and forcing people out. And usually the sheriff is in the rich guys pocket.

But it was just taken a bit too far to be believable in this movie for me. When people start handing over relatives and doing nothing, I just find it hard to believe. And TBH they deserve it, if they're just going to lie down and take it like that.

If they all stuck together, they may still lose. But they'd take a few of his men with them, and maybe even kill the boss. All it takes is one shot to the head and he's gone.

That is true and I think that might be the reason they went over the top, to shock people with something that has been seen many times before. Don't know if that is reason enough though. I too thought this was the typical western revenge movie when Delarues character showed up. And it is. It's decently shot, acted and it shuns some of the obvious Hollywood traps while not being totally artsy non action European about it. His last film, the legend of Michael Kal something suffered from that.

Don't regret seeing it, but it's no McGabe and Mrs Miller.

reply

Yeah I did enjoy the movie. Perhaps they could have changed things a bit, so the young lad went to fire a shot at Delarue and got killed by one of his goons. Just to show that they're ready for trouble.

Because as things stand, I didn't get convinced that there was nothing they could have done. They were all close to him, and he started shooting random people. Any hot head with a gun could have ended him.

I never got into McCabe and Mrs. Miller, is it worth a watch?

It's one of my favorite westerns, but very low key. Depends if you like Altman in general I suspect. It tackles the same themes as here, only much more realistic and poignant.

How is he trolling?

It is a legitimate question. Anyone who would not of shot that dirtbag is an absolute worthless coward.

He is one man, he might be backed by goons but once he is dead they are outnumbered and will not last long.

End it.

Literally, I despise the cowards who would not fight back.

And it sounds like you are one of them.

I don't give a fvck about you or what you think.

Wouldn't be much of a movie if he got shot early on would it..
It's a small detail worth being overlooked considering how good the movie is, but it would have been pretty darn rubbish if Hanibal wasn't in it don't you think?
Just another American yee-haa shoot 'em up.

That's no excuse. All it'd take is one person to blow his brains out, yet we're supposed to believe that people would hand over their relatives? No.

Its a danish movie.

I think the mayor wanting to go along with Delarue would have helped a lot to convince people. He's an authority figure and he's telling you to take the easy way out so it kinda makes sense that people would go along with it.

There's also the fact that only the boy really had the option to fight back, the guy without legs had no family and the other man died with no warning.

I really hated that weasel sheriff/priest, shame they couldn't give him what he deserved.

Once upon a time in the west.

Agreed. It's especially annoying when you take into account how easily they've captured Jon and how many armed men they had. They had MORE armed men than Delarue (which we know when Delarue says that Jon killed all his men) so WTF? Enjoyable movie nonetheless.

But it's similar with the previous scene when Jon let those animals rape his wife and kill his son. He should have killed them the moment he had a chance or told his son to pull the gun with his leg or at least shoot him the moment he grabbed his kid (even shooting him when he put a knife to his son's throat would have been better). Or at least point his gun upwards and shoot the ceiling to get the attention of the driver.

Good point 😂
He had more men and they were tactical geniuses, sealing off all avenues of escape and the Sheriff was able to fire one shot killing his horse preventing his mistake. It was like they were the navy seals and they were afraid of about 6 bad guys (I counted how many got killed at the end).

I disagree about the assault on his wife though. When he had the gun drawn, he thought that he had things under control and didn't know that the guy had like four more guns under this jacket. Good point about firing the gun to get the driver's attention. That would have been the best course of action. Still, given the stress of the situation, I can see a lapse where you think it's important to get the gun on the floor even though it's not really important. This isn't something that you encounter normally, so it's easy to mess up.

If anything, I find movies unrealistic where everyone fights perfectly in life and death situations, this was a nice departure, you just get sad thinking, awe, he almost saved the day. Too bad he messed up.

Ummmm....because then the movie would have ended after ~15 minutes. 
