(Spoiler) Beck's fingers

I love how they put Beck's fingers after he got back in HOT WATER.
I can't even imagine the pain he was in.
Ever tried to put warm a frostbitten hand? The pain is unbearable.

reply

I've never gotten actual frostbite but thawing out my thighs after being outside in -40 degree Celsius in Canada and then going inside sitting next to the fire place fùcking hurts. Sometimes I just want to stay outside because at least it gets numb over time. But I don't want to get frostbite.

Did the movie point at any way that the water was "HOT"? Sure, they asked about warming up, but still the water could have been around room temperature, but due to its specific heat capacity being over 4 times higher than air's, it would be more effective in heating the hands and finger than air would be. And thus a very clever thing to do.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_capacity#Specific_heat_capacity

Science in short: The water surrounding his hands would have over 4 times more heat energy in it than the air would have, if both were heated to same temperature (let's say: room temperature).

Also, it's quite likely this guy just simply was "beyond pain" at that point. After all, his hands were dead and they had to be amputated.

reply

Yeah his hands were dead so I don't think he probably felt anything.

It's really cool though Beck in real life is a doctor and uses his formed hands (they kind of look like stubby fists) in lieu of using prosthetics. He even has a pretty looking reconstructed nose aswell. I Mean he's not the most gorgeous person but he looks relatively normal for what happened to him.

He also has a really inspiring outlook on life in general like when he talked about over coming his new hands, growing his new nose via his forehead and ultimately returning to work.

He even has the copy of the piece of paper that said he had died and says it's like his everest certificate or something like that.

You can watch him on the YouTube video Medical city pathologist Beck Weathers Mount everest survivorhttps://youtu.be/fmFOG-G8m-4

never been that cold, and even then, that scene made me cringe. pretty stupid scene

reply

Why stupid? Trying to save someone's fingers, or even their hands, is stupid?

I hope you never have an emergency where you go to the hospital. How stupid it would be for them to try to save you, right? Pretty stupid, indeed.

reply

it's stupid because:

1. the hands were already frostbitten. there's no saving that

2. clearly, the water was hot. you can see the steam coming out

3. who the fcuck puts frostbitten hands into hot water? the fingers would've just broken off

sorry gabe, but you're as stupid as that scene....

and that's pretty damn stupid

reply

Let me help you, since you just don't seem to get it...

First, even if his fingers had already died due to frost bite, his hands may not have, and putting them in the water may very well have saved them, which it did for his left one.

In extreme cold, including inside the tent, which would be lucky to have a temp even reaching freezing, body temperature water would have steam coming off of it.

At you really that dense? (You don't really need to answer that question. It's obvious, at this point.)

An afterthought...I think they know better than you.

LOL, good one. So the_butch knows more about treating frostbite than the specialist in high altitude/extreme cold medicine who actually treated Beck on site? Perhaps the_butch would post his medical school and postgraduate training in the field. I bet it would be a very short post.

and to my other stupid friend, infrapedophile. you obviously have no knowledge on the side of medicine, so please go back to the playground, wearing your hoodie and sunglasses, and live up to your name some more

reply

Well, of course! the_butch is using his extensive armchair medical knowledge to determine that the people there were morons. And lets not forget that the water must have been hot due to seeing steam. He must have done really well in sixth grade science.

gabe, my friend, say no more. i say that to save yourself from being embarrassed even more, you already-stupid-a$$

reply

You're comical, butch. You can try to keep digging yourself out of the hole you've dug, but each time you try you sound even MORE ignorant.

What's next? Are you going to argue that the earth is flat because that's the way it seems when you look out of your mother's basement window? Nah, it'll probably be something like global warming is a hoax.

What's a hand without fingers?

I'd call 98 degree water hot.

reply

Hot? Who said the water was hot? The water would have been body temperature, at most. They were trying to save his fingers, so the pain would have been worth it.
