Really touching and enjoyable disaster flick
Incredibly touching and sad movie. I was not expecting that from a Hollywood Blockbuster. I agree it follows the typical tropes that come with a disaster film but it still managed to be entertaining without being insulting. I am no climber so perhaps it was a whole load of bollocks to those that do this for a sport but it seemed genuine to me.
I get why people do this but that does not mean I understand it. To endure those crazy temperatures - not to mention the physicality required - or to want to even put oneself in the death zone where so much can go wrong (altitude sickness to cerebral oedema) really does my mind in.
Do people even stop to enjoy their surroundings while climbing? It seems like it would take everything the body has to give just to get to the top that one would only truly appreciate it once the ascent had been made but even those moments must be so fleeting as you quickly need to be making your descent again due to the lack of oxygen up there.
Hats off to those that have done it, especially considering the mortality rate that out of a few hundred that attempt the ascent each year, ten or more people die. But I still think people are crazy to even attempt this in the first place.
I would say this was definitely worth watching and I am glad I grabbed it in my Netflix queue.
Solid 7 out of 10 disaster/adventure sort of stuff
