The Skulls
British Edition
shareNever saw that. Similarities?
shareIt's a movie from the early 2000's that starred Joshua Jackson and Paul Walker.
It was about the skull and bones society at Yale.
It's a secret society that a lot of powerful people are rumored to have been a part of, Presidents and the like.
The boys are given extreme power by being a part of the society.
But their motto is "A skull above any other."
Joshua Jackson's character is a poor boy who gets chosen because he's super smart and athletic and charming.
The rest of the Skulls are crazy rich and can get away with murder.
And a little ways into the movie, they actually do.
Then the cover up begins.
Yadda yadda.
It basically was the way the trailer to this looked.
Never saw it but I'm familiar with Skull and Bones. George Bush father and son were in it. So was John Kerry I think. The captain of the football team is automatically tapped for it, or at least that used to be the case.
They get pretty crazy I think and there are some weird, silly (IMO) old rituals that they maintain. Also their building is right on campus and is is big and has no windows, which is creepy.
Never heard of them getting away with murder though!
Same thing I thought.
The best things are last
That is what it is based on

Very much so, I can't wait to see it! The Riot Club is based on The Bullingdon Club in Oxford University, British Prime Minister David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson were both part of it.

Next week Glamour magazine is holding a live chat with the principle cast: Irons, Claflin, Booth, Jessica Brown-Findlay and Holliday Grainger.
I hope Jessica will be there and not let the jerk who hacked her phone and released her private pictures keep her from the event. I've seen the guys interviewed about the film but not Grainger or Findlay, so I'd like to hear from them.
I read the first review to emerge and it said the whole cast is excellent.
Also a year or so later, Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne.
shareyou can only sort of compare (the trailer of) this movie to "the skulls". the entire skulls series was mostly about the secret society and being "chosen" and feeling special but it was weak compared the viciousness demonstrated in just the trailer for this film. that's why "the skulls" is a let down the second time around because it hardly packs any punch and it never had much tense intrigue aside from a few weak elements like having him race to a special spot like it was a game or the books with rules like a cute little club.
this looks truly depraved and twisted. i think it will be much more entertaining and the club aspect isn't as important as what appears to be a disaster waiting to happen and then we get to watch it happen. "the skulls" has the feel of a pretty, make-up caked YA drama but this looks more like adult drama.
Just saw the trailer, and it doesn't look at all depraved and twisted. In my opinion, it looks kind of boring. Salo is a depraved and twisted film. This isn't one.
shareYea NOPE... I've seen both and they are just different sides of the same coin. Or same set-up, characters, plot etc.. different accents

well, while there's a similarity from OUR perspective, think about how this is a british film. there, private clubs with secret special status is common; it's why i say that the first "harry potter" film is bad for kids to watch. it's all about worshiping class and wealth and being special and it just feeds some need to covet other people's things. in the USA, we see the "secret society" as cool in simple ways but to them, it's more about wealth and power that's regularly something they wish they had when it's a funny novelty to us. IF we were british and we worshiped people who had wealth, power and a special group and they were drunk party types who go too far... let me put it this way... i see that most british films are all about "sociology" but we don't care that much. we don't WANT movies to remind us to get along and hold society together. as a nation we DON'T WANT to care about each other and practically every british drama i've seen is all about pointing out unsavory types in society. "the skulls" are "unsavory" but being american, we can dismiss them. "the riot club", however, are in some ways a sick threat to society and that's how they appreciate it. i'd have to really write a massive essay but the films i'd use as reference would be "kidulthood"/"adulthood", "snatch", "one day", "the hole", etc.
shareI think you are discussing something other than the film here.
But Ok then..
Secret societies are quite common at schools here in the US as is the envy of not being included- almost every school in the US (at least at the big ivy affiliated ones anyway) have clubs that resemble the The Pitt Club and its Oxonian peer, the Bullingdon.
When I attended William & Mary the (Big) groups/societies were Phi Delta Alpha which was once the Flat Hats, Seven Society, Order of the Crown & Dagger and at other schools I knew about Skull & Serpent (f.1865), ANAK Society (f.1908),The Sevens (or Seven Society) (f. 1905) ) and if you think the aristo-craps of American industry are not favored for admission/inclusion you are kidding yourself.
Just ask Mark Zuckerberg how much it smarts when you are not selected.
These clubs forge lifelong connections and are used to groom our future leaders, heads of industry and bankers. Many go on to Bilderberg membership afterwards. There very much is a class difference in America as they have in England we just don;t have titles/peerage-the Carnegies, Scaiffs, Belmonts, Astors, Browns, Mellons, Roosevelts. Rockafellers, Drummonds, Huntingtons, Ingalls, Vanderbilts (although they are v. close to being broke), DuPonts, hell even the Bush's are included now
The wealth these people are born into is definitely something others covet far more than a novelty-- just watch all the girls throw themselves at these young men. They forget any type of self respect and do not realize that Sloan Rangers only marry other Sloan Rangers they only slum it on the "down low" when they are young or are cheating. A young man;s mother is always a guarantee against gold diggers They had a another term for it in the movie but can't remember it right now.
And all of our movies/media coverage is propaganda in some sort or another it IS selling you something whether you realize it or not
OK Thanks for the trip down memory lane this morning 'twas quite fun

More like "The Skulls Lite". The Skulls are a bunch of spoiled rich kids that deal with maintaining the secrecy of their club by committing and covering up a murder. The Riot Club is about a bunch of spoiled rich kids that get drunk and petulant, trash a pub and beat up the pub owner.
"In a time of universal deceit,
telling the truth is a revolutionary act."
George Orwell
Shouldn't that read "The Bullingdon Cub/The Assassins/Piers Gaveston Society - American Style"?
After all The Bullingdon is at least a century older than the Skull & Bones. There are many clubs at Oxford. The Bullingdon is just the most obvious, because its members wear bespoke tailored green coats, and other unusual clothes, when they go dining. (The Bullingdon uniforms are seriously expensive.)

"If you ain't a marine then you ain't *beep* (Don't blame me for abusive defence stickers!)
He meant the movie. Not the actual club.
shareWell the country/school is older so duh
