Monsters under the bed
I was brought up Catholic and in my tender years in the 70's I spent many a sleepless night petrified that every little sin I committed would send me to straight to a horrible place called Hell. I was thinking about this recently in regards to horror films as I thought if you could capture that type of fear, it would make a pretty good and different film. This thought was quickly followed by the realisation that this type of film would never fly because in the first place, in order to really fear something you have to believe in it and that type of fear also came from an innocent mind. Secondly, the majority of movie goers think they are above religion and they role their eyes and shout insults at believers because they think they know best and get very defensive if they think they are being preached to and can't suspend their belief because they think their human rights have been attacked. Monsters under the bed, however, completely okay.
That feeling of fear? I got it when I watched Angel Heart. I was in my teens then; The Remaining, I thought was an original horror film but it crossed into a preachy film towards the end which was disappointing and probably scared off a few "really smart" non-believers. However, what struck me as completely off was that although they rightly depicted a lot of good people not being chosen as they lacked faith, surely there would be a majority of obviously bad people having one hell (excuse the pun) of a time just being themselves. I mean, if the end was at hand there would be some really unpleasant un-PG stuff going on.
