While a few enlisted soldiers did manage to get commissioned due to leadership abilities shown on the battlefield, the great majority of them did not and many remained private soldiers right through the war.

There is such thing as a career NCO by the way. I didn't thing he looked to old for the part at all, Plus stress causes people to look a lot older then they are.

There are many career NCO's. My Grandfather was a Sgt from WWII all the way to his retirement in 1960. Maybe it doesn't work that way in the military where ever you're from.

Umm... once again WRONG! There were many 50 yr old non coms in WWII, most of them were WWI vets who had trouble and therefore never advanced, or were demoted. We don't know Pitt's history. He only says Africa,France,Belgium,Germany. Yet he has a WWI sidearm.
