Why is he called Blackie?

Black in Spanish is Negro. Why would they use an English word for his nickname?

I tried to look up whether it was a real person to find the answer, but I found conflicting reports.

Nicknames are nicknames. I am English speaking though call my wife coño. A term of endearment in Spanish.

He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.

reply

Uh not sure if you're joking.

reply

Hahahaha.... I called my wife cono she kneed my ballls

reply

Because he was from Ireland. I can't see any other reason, can you?

reply

I'm from Sweden and when I was a kid me and my friends used to think English sounded cool. Maybe Blackie's friends thought the same.

Anybody know anything about the person the character is based on?

reply

The character Blackie is based upon the real life Brance Munoz Mosquera who was also known as "Tyson" reportedly due to his resemblance to boxer Mike Tyson. (Based on photos I've seen I don't think he looked like Tyson.) Not sure why he is fictionalized as "Blackie" in the film but likely for legal reasons (survivors etc.)

After a quick google it looks like that name belongs to La Quica.

reply

Thanks, I think you're right. My thoughts. The real life Quica was black aka "Tyson." In the film, Quica was not black and Blackie was of course black. Maybe "Blackie" was a composite fictional character. Some of the confusion (at least to me) is from the film makers trying to walk the line between reality and fiction in order to avoid liability.

It kind of seems like the people who made this show didn't really care like paying close attention to detail.

One character is name Limon (Lemon in english).

Another character is named La Quica (colombian slang for fat girl).

Then you have Poison... and the Lion.

Is it really that much of a stretch that one henchmen (who doesn't speak english btw) would call himself Blackie?

I mean it's not exactly like everyone's named Tom, Mike, John, and then Blackie.

I mean, the name makes sense in the context of this show 

reply

For nicknames, Limón is pretty damn stupid. León isn't too bad because lions are kinda cool. Then again, nicknames are nicknames.

E.g., when a foreigner lives in a different country he might become the "El Inglés", "El Americano" (or gringo), "El Francés", "El Portugués" and so on. This all just means that whomever immigrated to a foreign country gained one of those nicknames.

Anyway, Blackie sounds better than "Negrito" if just because it's less corny, friendly (not the exact word I'd use but works) and more formal in a way.

Some South American countries, including Brazil, have a tendency to come up with the most unlikely nicknames (as well as pet names). I have no idea why.

reply

He's called 'Blackie' because that's what the American screenwriter named him.
There's was no such real life character with that name in Pablo's inner circle.

reply

because *beep* was already taken

...but they hung him anyway.
Hanged, Ami. Your father was not a tapestry.
