Season 2 was a masterpiece

I would rank it up there with the Wire season 3, Breaking Bad's final season and any of the Sopranos better seasons. Much tighter than season 1, tense, intricate and with very high stakes. Less need for exposition made for a stronger season too.

I enjoyed both seasons but thought season 2 flagged a bit in the middle. Tata my darling I love you started to get on my nerves. Okay, the radio dialougue was a key part of what brought him down but it felt slow to me.

reply

Agreed! It just gets better and better. I love the narration from the DEA agent. Probably Netflix's best show to date.

reply

Kind of agree, the last 2 or 3 had some slow parts when it focused on Escobar because he didn't have much to do.

The Search Bloc, DEA , CIA, guerrillas and Cali storyline started to get more interesting.

reply

Am I the only person that finds the show to be kind of boring. None of the main characters are interesting other than Escobar. The dialogue is somewhat bland as well. I think it's a decent show just not a great one.

reply

Yes the only one. Pat yourself on the back for being boring yourself.

You aren't the only one despite what these people above me say. I personally found season 2 to be a step down from season one in terms of the story arc. This is obviously because they were limited by the facts and the fixed date of Pablo's death. The first season spanned so much time and was more inventive in its narrative portrayal (I'm thinking about the opening shootout of episode 1, with its Goodfellas-esque freeze-frames). Season 2 was incredibly slow and tedious at times. I found the only truly compelling episodes to be episodes 6/7 where Pablo begins his retaliation and leads up to the bombing, and the final two episodes which were solely fixated on Pablo and the wonderful performances by both Escobar and Tata.

reply

Me too. I can hardly bring myself to finish an episode. It's just not enough story to stretch over 4(!) seasons.

I loved it - and I agree it was a masterpiece....this is one of the best programs in my list of faves!

It reminded me of Breaking Bad a lot, which is amazing because BB is my favorite show. I just loved every minute of this season.

Season 2 was a low budget bore.
A lot of filler material replacing a possible proper storyline, production value went down the drain , and the limited competence of the actors and creative crew became more obvious .

It's a common issue with US TV shows; the domestic market is so big that dumbing down the show will still get them enough viewers , and expectations are lower to begin with .

So every one of them?

...but they hung him anyway.
Hanged, Ami. Your father was not a tapestry.

Episodes 3 and 4 of Seasons 2 were the best episodes of the entire series IMO. They were so intense. Episode 3 with Carillo shooting the kid, and then throwing the one guy out of the plane. Then we get introduced to the Castano brothers. Maritza in the church - i really thought they were going to kill her. That was a scary scene.

Then the best scene of the series IMO when Berna takes Pena to the Casino. And he goes down the stairs and sees the Castano brothers, and then Judy saunters in and says "Agent Pena...welcome" Just the way that was shot was perfect.

Much better than S1. I think less of Holbrook narrating the *beep* out of every scene helped make it more watchable.
