What benefits does america have getting involved with these countries???

They have the biggest recreation market for illicit drug, what exactly is their government protecting them from? Pablo been dead for decades and drug use has only gone up. I mean it is the junky capital of the world and they still meddle into other countries.

Any good honest governments top priority should be to protect its citizens from something that is determental to the publics good
Of course this is naive but when thousands of people were spilling blood all over the streets of Miami , the country finally took action

The Mexican cartels through are being left unchecked because of politics as our governments do tens of billions in trade

1000s in Miami?

As for the OP back then it was a combo of Cold War and heavy U.S. trade which predated the Cold War. Our sphere of influence as the saying goes in INR.

No doubt that a sizeable chunk of this country cannot function on drugs and I believe pot is a dangerous drug that should be illegal

reply

Cannot function without drugs I mean

if the idea is less consumption and less death its a great cause but the opposite has happened. The war on drugs was bad. I don even think pablo was worth billions, thats propaganda at its finest. If he truly was he could of had his own army. Its really tough to compute a drug kingpins net worth especially with people who never saw his records- he never had any.

It was just justification to get involved with another south american country.

With the drug trade I think it comes down to two things. Firstly it's illegal to import or distribute these substances so it's logical to expect law enforcement agencies to investigate both the sellers and the importers wherever they may be. Secondly and probably more important is the flow of money out of the country, thats not only millions or billions leaving the country but there is no tax on the goods they are selling so it's a double whammy. If the cocaine industry is worth anywhere near what they say that's vast sums of money.
