Are the Cali Cartel as interesting as Escobar?

Escobar's story is so interesting. There's his terrorism, his flirtation with the Communists, his attempts to become a politician, and the viglante group he inspired.
But with him dead, and the next season about the Cali Cartel. I just wonder if they're as riveting as Pablo's story.
Does anyone know much about them? They seem far quieter and more professional, which doesn't seem like it will translate into better television.

reply

the sad thing is that in season two, Escobar makes them look "decent people" which is not the case.....

reply

Inherently the Cali Cartel maybe isn't as interesting (or well-known) as Escobar, but that doesn't mean that they can't make a drama series about them interesting. I hope they can pull it off.

Do you even know what honor is?
- A horse.

reply

I don't think so, but there was some dramatic license taken to make even Escobar more interesting.

There never was a colonel Carillo, and Escobar didn't personally assassinate any head of the Search Bloc.

As far as I know there wasn't even a gun battle when Escobar was finally killed, both he and Limon were just trying to escape.

The producers might just add more fiction elements if they need to.

reply

Wait it a minute. I clearly remember the newspapers stating there was a gunbattle. Doesn't mean it happened of course but I sure as hell remember that was what reported.

reply

I just checked Mark Bowdens book and he doesn't give any narrative of a gun battle or Search Bloc members being killed by Pablo or Limon, just Limon trying to escape through a window and Pablo trying to escape over the roof tops.

I could be wrong still...I'll try Google and newspaper reports of the time.

reply

They can easily mix it with some fiction to make them more interesting than they were in reality.

reply

It indeed is interesting. They were more business-like but still ruthless. The cartel that took them out was even more ruthless. If you want to get an idea of what's to come, check out the Colombian series "El Cartel". It's available on Netflix with subtitles.

reply

Yeah the Cartel of Norte del Valle started by "Jabon" an ex police officer who took the Rodriguez (Cali Cartel) out of the picture.
Jabon's cartel was still based in the same or nearby area as the Cali one, and he used to work as a hitman and enforcer for them originally.
Jabon was as cruel as Pablo but without the whole flashing and noise.

reply

Exactly! Also the infighting between Jabon and Don Diego, one of the other cartel kingpins, led to a massive war that resulted in the death of over 3000 in the Valle de Cauca department.

Chupeta was another interesting North Valley kingpin. He got into a war with another North Valley Don and killed his brother along with 35 other family members. When Chupeta wascaught in Brazil after being on the run, he looked rather freakish from so many plastic surgeries.

The crazy stories go on and on. The writers for Narcos have more than enough material to work with for the next season.

reply

OH man he looked like a mutant tranny; and all those plastic surguries that ruined his face all for nothing.
I do hope they explore some of those bizarre occurrences. I grew up in Cali that time and it was all strange.

reply

Not sure if the timeline works but Narcos needs a season that includes the Grazelda Blanco story.

reply

Exactly, how will season 3 continue without a charismatic villain like Escobar?

reply

Perna, the most awesome character so far, will be in it, so it's all good.
