5 episodes into the series....when do we start caring about the characters?

Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying it. The history aspect in particular. But it seems to be more plot driven than character driven so far. When do the characters become more developed?

Never. The only semi-interesting characters are Pablo and Carillo. Everyone else remains pretty bland for the entirety of the show.

Javier is a boss

Every series I've ever seen with a board on IMDb always has a poster who asks this question.

For this series, it seems to be you. Not saying that as an insult, btw.

Breaking Bad was considered by many to be one of the greatest achievements by any species anywhere in the universe in the last 13.7 billion years.

But I didn't like the show and spent the entire first season wondering when it would get good, spent three seasons wondering when I would like the characters and spent the last two tortuously waiting for someone to put a bullet in Mr White.

I felt dirty and violated after that show was over.

Sometimes, a thing will just not be to your taste. I wish I had not invested so much of my life in Breaking Bad. If I had quit where you are now with this show, I would have been happier for it.

If you're not liking it, there are so many other series out there to choose from.

I understand where you're coming from. I've seen a lot of series, a LOT. All the greats. The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Deadwood, True Detective Season 1, Hannibal, Six Feet Under, The Shield, etc. etc. Those shows DO have superbly crafted and diverse characters. This show however, the majority of them weren't fleshed out enough. Pablo and Javier definitely were though. Finished Season 2 just recently, still thought it was great.

It is just more plot driven. Except for Pablo and his wife and Steve Murphy, it does not go that deep on characterization. Even with Murphy we learn somethings about his life in season 1, but in season 2, he is mainly a spectator and narrator. But honestly, in Narcos I did not bother so much about that we did not learn much backstory on Pena or La Quica or Carillo. It was great without it.
