Locke's accent?

He seemed to drift from South Wales to Eastern European, at first I thought it was deliberate depending on who he was talking to but on reflection I'm not so sure?

reply

I thought the same.

*Oh look, a troll* Get beck under your fecking bridge, you wee gob5hite.

As a Welshman I just couldn't get used to his accent, it sounded like a strange Indian/Welsh mix. Why couldn't Hardy just use his normal accent? It's not like it was integral to the story

reply

ahahahahahaha

Yeah I agree. I love Wales and I've got nothing against the Welsh accent but was it really needed? But weird I reckon lol.

reply

I wonder why as Wales doesn't really come into the story? He's travelling from Birmingham to London. I agree with others above. In this global age, why bother with a funny accent, especially when it doesn't appear necessary?🐭

Yes, that's the only reason I can think of.🐭

He states his family is a long line of s***, and presumably that long line of s*** wasn't the most ambitious kind, so it's likely they all lived out their lives in their hometown/city in Wales, and thus Locke probably moved to England to escape his heritage. That and it sounds like he has an illustrious career that probably meant his projects are mostly in England, and it made sense for him to move there throughout the course of his career.

I'm also a Welshman living in England.

Not saying it's not an explanation, but it's definitely involves a very long line of maybe's , ifs and buts.🐭

How would it? It doesn't have any bearing on the story whatsoever, he's just Welsh as a character. It makes it a bit more interesting, in my opinion, because you don't often hear Welsh accents on film.

Not disagreeing with any of that, but just seems a little odd having a Welsh accent done by an Englishman when as you say, it doesn't seem to have any bearing on the story. I just would have thought Hardy may have used his normal accent for this role.🐭

reply

Honestly, this may be overanalyzing but I felt that they chose his strange accent to sort of emphasize that he really is a unique man in today's society; literally with the accent and figuratively with his morals and values. Sounds like some hipster bs when I type it but I don't know it seems plausible to me.

I've just started watching this and I can't get over his peculiar Indian sounding accent! I assumed that it was meant to be Welsh but he really does sound Indian lol...

And that's why..... you always leave a note.

reply

what the *beep*, he sounds like ghandi, south african, indian and irish to me and I'm welsh, his accent is bizarre as *beep*

reply

It bothered me pretty much, I just don't see the point of that. I can swear some times he sounded like Apu from The Simpsons. It ruined the movie especially because everyone else speaks normally

reply

Exactly! There was no reason for his character to have been Welsh and as Tom clearly wasn't mastering the accent I don't understand why they didn't just have him use his natural voice.

And that's why..... you always leave a note.
