Just saw it tonite & really liked it

I just saw this movie tonite and was very pleasantly surprised. I thought the action was great, the storyline very nicely done, scripting solid. Pacing very good & tight - hard to get right in this kind of movie but it's really well done IMHO. Acting very solid and very consistent with the movie's nature. Very stylized - like Kill Bill - a lot of fun, good sense of humor in the right places too.

Bottom line, I think this is a great action escape flick in the tradition of Jason Bourne, Kill Bill, Transporter, Terminator ... if you like movies like those, I'll bet you'll like this one too.

I read some of the negative reviews and my guess is that the movie may well not match the gaming tradition ... I have no idea really, since I've never played any of the Hitman games, but can at least see why someone might object on grounds of infidelity to the games. Me, like I say, I took this strictly as a movie in the line of Bourne, Tarentino, etc, and in that light I think it works very, very well.

About the franchise ... I saw the 2007 version and liked it OK but think this one is much better. I'd love to see sequels sort of a la Jason Bourne. Sort of doubtful I guess based on b.o. but hey I can hope.

I enjoyed it as well.

You have offended my family, and you have offended the Shaolin Temple-- Bruce Lee

reply

I couldn't believe how much I liked it. Surprised its been given such a hard time.

reply

Me too. I'm thinking about seeing it again tomorrow with family.

reply

I watched it yesterday and I liked it, too. I like the first one a bit better only because I'm partial to Timothy's version of 47.

I will definitely buy the DVD when it comes out.

I played all the Hitman games and have been a fan since the beginning.
I hated the first movie adaptation but liked this on also because I knew it wasn't based on any of the storylines in the games but a seperate adventure which was portrayed accurately in regards to the 47 persona. I did not like the Zachary Quinto character with a liquid titanium underarmor? They could have explained the abilities of the daughter better cause it seemed as if she could see into the future at times which has been recorded to a be an actual ability humans have under certain conditions and only up to 5 seconds into the future. They could have used actual science to explain certain abilities but now its more like xmen and they're just mutants with special powers.

reply

I like Quinto's character because he was a good nemesis.

I don't know why they didn't take the time to explain things more clearly. I guess a $35 million dollar budget can only get you so much. I don't understand why a lot of film companies spend the time and money to fly to different countries to film. Are they really saving any money?

reply

I agree about the Quinto character.

As for explaining things ... I have really mixed feelings about this. Some movies I really need to understand pretty well what's going on to really enjoy them. Others I need a whole lot less explanation for one reason or another. Other things I think are really just there for "flavoring." Have you seen the old Star Trek shows? If so you'll remember that the Starship Enterprise's "warp drive" comes up in almost every show; and "dilithium crystals" (which power the warp drive) come up in almost every other show. T this day I have no idea what a dilithium crystal was meant to be and have no idea at all how a warp drive is supposed to work. Didn't matter at all though: all I needed to know was the bare minimum and that was plenty enough to give me some feeling for what Star Trek Enterprise space travel might involve.

In Hitman's case, a lot of the plot elements just seem to me to be points to hang action on: all I need to know is "something happened" and there's about to be a lot of shooting or car chasing as a result. Some of the things are really just for "flavoring": all I need to know is enough to get a taste of what it feels like to be there and that's it. So I don't think the movie folks were skimping on money in not explaining a lot of things. If they had spent much time in explanation we'd have been drowning out the real story which revolves around "what it's like to be Agent 47" We get lots of car chases, action scenes, deadpan expressions, laconic pauses when he gets asked something rather sensitive and personal, and so on. Don't really need much more to get that wonderful madcap feel for "what it's like to be Agent 47."

My 2 bits anyway ...

I saw the movie last night and quite liked it, I watched the previous hitman movie with Timothy Olyphant which was good.

I've played all the Hitman games and this movie is quite close to the game, in which the agent is a genetically engineered person with no emotions and physical and intelligence enhancements (hence the perfect killing machine).

But in the previous move they were children raised to become agents.

I read some reviews and I thought this movie was gonna be CRAP. To my surprise I liked the fight scenes, the car chases, and the gun play. Sometimes you have to see things for yourself and don't believe everything you read. 7/10

Look at the night sky, where does it end?

reply

Totally agree.

reply

Never played the game, never read a review. And I loved it :D

You have been watching the Loki trilogy (of sorts) Empire magazine.

Saw the film earlier this week, and liked it. It seemed like it would be a good thing to see due to the exciting trailer, and it was. I liked the European feel of the film (it was filmed in Germany)the action was off the hook, exciting as hell, and I like he fact that the film took the time to establish the main leads as actual characters instead of the same old tired stereotypes. Liked the fact that the main female lead didn't have to do a nude scene, and her transition to being a kick-a** fighter was handled a little more realistically than in most action pictures you see. Also liked Rupert Friend as the unemotional Hitman 47 (I'd only seen him previously in the series HOMELAND as one of the agents.) Liked it and would recommend it if you like decent action films with a brain and some heart.

I also haven't seen either the 2007 HITMAN or played the video game, and I still liked it.

I went in expecting to see something rather bad based on the reviews and stuff I heard about it. But ultimately this turned out to be a very enjoyable, straight forward science-fiction/action flick.

I thought the action was great

I agree here, the quick cuts, good choreaography and beatuiful visuals made this a very action heavy ride

the storyline very nicely done, scripting solid

The storyline felt rather basic, following the classic "Protect girl -> help her find her dad -> fight the baddie" formula we've seen quite a lot in the past. I would say the plot was alright, nothing to brag about but not bad either.

Pacing very good & tight

Agreed, usually this kind of movie reaches a dry phase towards the middle, I expected the hotel scene being the begin of that phase but was surprised that they didn't go for a "quiet" moment there. The pacing was well done

in the tradition of Jason Bourne

Disagreed, the movie was VERY heavy on the science fiction aspect and kept it's action unrealistic and, like you said, the pacing was quicker than in the Bourne series.

Kill Bill, Transporter,

eeehehhhhhh...I can't rally agree here either. I would say it's style felt a lot more Avenger-ized (bright tones, white are, straight forward action) than any Transporter or Kill-Bill installment. If anything I'd say it does share a lot of similarity with Crank in it's tone and pacing (but not humor and gore)

Personally I preferred the 2007 version as it did have better acting, cinematography and had a pretty great script. However: don't be too afraid about a sequel.

The movie cost approx. $35mil to make and currently at the $74mil mark. So it already did break even. So it's not a failure.

It had a fairly low budget so there might still be a chance. Hell...I'd love directing a sequel  (but they'll never want me)
