so, i read the book a little while ago and LOVED it!! i personally pictured will as jude law, i thought it was a perfect fit! it might have came into my head because i watched Gattaca a month or so beforehand where he was in a sort of similar role, and i just thought he was perfect!! but when i saw the actual casting for the film im not so sure about Sam Caflin , isn't he too young? i think Emilia Clarke is perfect for lou though!!
i was just curious about who other people cast in their head whilst reading the book?
I haven't read the book but upon watching the film, I didn't really like Emilia Clarke's portrayal - I don't know if it was the character or the actress but she was way too much for me and felt exactly like a character in a book, rather than a real person. Personally, I would have like Jenna Coleman in the lead role instead.
Sam Clafin was good - engaging, real and of course, gorgeous!

Personally, I don't have a problem with Emilia Clarke's portrayal.
Now the only reason I saw this movie is because Jenna Coleman was in it but I'm glad Jenna wasn't the lead but only because if she had been I don't think she could have done series 9 of Doctor Who.

Parts of her performance were fine, it's just that others were way over the top - I actually suspect it was down to how she was directed and how the character was written as being this cutesy, quirky girl, rather than Emilia's acting. I just think next to Jenna, she just didn't come across at all natural.

As a fellow Whovian and Clara fan, I would have to agree on that! I think Jenna's time as leading lady will come soon (already, if you count Victoria) and I'm betting she'll probably be an international star in a few years, as she's stunning AND she has talent. Plus she's Northern!

I think the casting choices fit, personally. Emilia Clarke really embodied Lou; and Sam Claflin...well, he's the attractive type, for sure. And I didn't think of Finnick Odair once while watching him as Will - a sign he's not been typecasted. :)
Two gorgeous people overall, playing the characters quite well I thought. Emilia's charm is definitely evident in this movie...so much so that I think part of it just has to be her natural personality. She's so just effervescent and infectiously happy as Lou - you can't fake that level of smiley. If so, you gotta at least give her props for that - she does a heck of a job. I did think some of the clothes they had her in looked a little dowdy/dopey: considering she was s'posed to be this '20something' but I digress...some of them were perfectly okay. That red dress for example - lovely!
As for the ages, I think both Emilia and Sam fit their characters' ages. I believe Lou is written in the 26 to 28 range, and Will is supposed to be around 35. They made Will slightly younger in the movie, but as it stands; Sam is 30, so I don't think it was much of a stretch at all. And Emilia is 29, but I personally think she looks much closer to mid-twenties, rather than almost 30...so again, I found it pretty plausible.
I read the book just before watching the movie so in my head Lou and Will are Emilia and Sam. My only "problem" ( not that it's a big one...) is that I would have kept movie Will's age 35. Will was much more mature compared to Lou, he had a career in business and was managing a company before his accident ( 2 years before he meets Lou )this is more consistent with a more mature man. I think Sam, who's 30, could have pulled 35 .
