I would have walked out on my family if I was Lou

In the movie they wasn't so bad but in the book it really got on my nerves. Lou's dad wasn't making enough and her mother was taking care of her father and sometimes Thomas and I understand that. But then you have Lou's sister who did absolutely nothing but get herself pregnant and live off of what Lou made along with the rest of the family. When she told Lou she was going back to school, Lou asked her mother if she could move into her sister's bedroom so she could get out of the small one she had been staying in and her freeloading sister threw a fit over it even though she would only be there on the weekends. If I were Lou I would have walked out and let them take care of their own selves. I mean, she did go stay with Patrick for a while but that was only because she sort of pushed it on it but then she moved back in with her parents instead of Will which was what she should have done since he offered. Anyone else agree?

Well, Lou's sister was definitely very annoying, had she been my sister I would have been far less accommodating with her...she really got on my nerves...
Anyway I think in the book Lou eventually moves to Will's place, I think it was when she split up with Patrick.

I think as the oldest the responsibility tends to fall on you more than younger siblings. I think it was nice that she was helping out but her dad's reaction (in the movie) when she was let go was awful! I'm sure she felt bad enough as it is without his little rant. It's at that point that I would have snapped back.

The father was upset with the shop owner who laid Lou off, not with Lou; however, when I first saw it i was like "wow pops is a butthole. Get off your duff and get a job." But after watching a few more times, he has tried a find work, but apparently Lou is the only one able to actually secure employment, besides her sister.

Yes, Lou's family members are leeches. In the book, her dad is always saying stuff to make her feel worthless and stupid. Her sister is a dead beat who won't work and thinks Lou is supposed to take care of her and her fatherless kid.

Will is the only who treated Lou like he loved her, with dignity and respect.

I haven't read the book so I was a little confused about her family. Every once in while someone would make a little snide remark about her so I thought there was more to the story with them but then nothing ended up happening. The movie just showed them as a family with money problems. I didn't understand the dynamic until I came to the boards here.

In the book, her sister works in a flowershop.

She use to, but then she's just staying at her parents house until she moves out to go to school

Yeah, I think her family was not bad compared to others, but sometimes they acted a bit selfish and no supportive at all.
The funny is,it was Will who really helped Lou to have aspirations and do something more for her life.He was like a father, brother and boyfriend. He was the only one who seemed to care about Lou's life and he wanted to get it better.
Her family really never said anything about Lou studying and getting better things in life, it was like they ,somehow, used her to get money and help the family.
But Will was who conviced her to have something more..So he was more like a family for her..
