Denzel has acted with some truly talented Afro-American actresses but they were always supporting/extremely minor roles, the only time he co-starred with an Afro-American actress on film was...Whitney Houston in The Preacher's Wife. Talking about monorities he also co-starred with the Sarita Choudhury in Mississipi Masala, she was a ball of fire in (her first) movie, probably deserved a better career.
What are some of the best and most powerful Afro-American co-stars (or borderline) Duo (Male and Female) in Hollywood history (a rarity), to see to what Denzel and Viola will/should be compared to ? Off the top of my head :
Cicely Tyson and Paul Winfield in Sounder (1972)
Ivan Dixon and Abbey Lincoln in Nothing But a Man (1964)
Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne in What's Love Got to Do with It (1993)
Danny Glover and Angela Bassett in Boesman and Lena (2000)
Hmm...I was thinking about Hotel Rwanda (2004) and A Raising in the sun (1961) but the wives roles feel truly like supporting ones.
I would add
Ossie David and Ruby Dee in Gone Are the Days/Purple Victorious, Cool Red, Do the Right Thing
Wesley Snipes and Saan Latham Disappearing Acts
Regina King and Cuba Gooding Jr. Jerry McGuire
Here's hoping Angela Basset and her husband Courtenay Vance will star in something.
So looking forward to the film and hoping it's not rated R. Families should this film together.
