Great performances

Despite all of the capital-A acting on display, Denzel Washington takes a minimalistic approach behind the camera, eschewing visual flourish for necessity. Utilizing close-ups on an actor’s face is the most powerful tool a director has at his/her disposal, Washington accordingly lets his supremely talented cast tell the story. If the confines of the backyard feel uncinematic, it’s not unintentional. Charlotte Bruus Christensen’s camera is pent up in the closed-in surroundings of the Maxson household. Washington intends for the audience to feel that claustrophobia set in for the audience as it does for Troy. http://www.cutprintfilm.com/reviews/fences/
