I have a feeling Washington will win all the awards
But if someone is voted to have been given a better performance, they won't go there because they'll be crucified.

shareThe awards season started few weeks ago and it's Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) who is winning almost all the (critics) awards and is now, the frontrunner.
The oscar for best actor is clearly between these two but Denzel is fighting for his 3rd oscar and when you are fighting for your 3rd (especially without having the double digit nominations), you must have everyting (or a lot !) in your side (Like Day-Lewis for Lincoln), which isn't the case for him. He is playing a very unlikeable character, the movie itself isn't getting the love some hoped (so far), there are some criticisms about him chosing to act the same (big) way as on stage, I don't know if it's true, I don't feel it based on the 2 trailers and featurette but if it's true, that's a mistake from him, in my opinion, especially if Viola adapted her acting to the film version, it could create an imbalance. But I need to see the movie to judge. And I think he's somehow taken for granted by a part of the critics group.
Viola going supporting, plus her overdue statut makes her an absolute lock for the supporting actress oscar and with the emmergence of Ali (Moonlight) who is winning all the supporting actor awards so far, it looks like we could have already 2 future black oscar winners, this could also decrease Denzel's chances.
I admit, this is kinda pessimist post, now of course, he is Denzel Fuc/ing Washington and he is getting raves for his performance (career's best, finest of the year male or female, tour de force, towering, etc...) and the (televised) and some of most important awards (SAG, BAFTA...even Golden Globes) have yet to come but to win his third oscar this year, he is not in the best position.
Egh, I doubt it. He's got his Oscar so I don't think he'd care.
Whatever you are, be a good one.
I disagree OP Casey Affleck is white, and young so the studios with his brother Ben and the power players in Hollywood WILL MAKE SURE he wins the Oscar. If Casey Affleck does NOT win the best actor Oscar I will be STUNNED. He is clearly the front runner. And Matt Damon produced the damn movie too! That is a lot of power behind the scenes. Denzel already won 2 Oscars but it would be nice if he got nominated again.
shareSteve,
Casey Affleck is still just Ben Affleck's brother. He's the guy who got under Jason Lee's skin in Chasing Amy. He's still renown for what is said to be a tour de force performance in the Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Not saying he doesn't deserve the nod here, but
No all too predictable cynical victim complex necessary here. If you don't think Hollywood doesn't play politics, awarding Oscars to make up for past slights than I don't know what to tell you.
Haven't seen the movie yet, but I think Denzel will definitely be nominated. It will almost be a crime not to nominate him based on just the trailers alone.
But do I think he will win? No, probably not.
Hate to break it to you, but he hasn't until now. Casey's bagged almost every critics award till now.
Denzel's already got two wins before. And a third win seems very unlikely. Ali and Davis are frontrunners as well. So it'll be pushing off the propaganda a line too far as well.
One day in the year of the fox came a time remembered well...

Random, unwarranted defensive quip alert.
I admit, sounds a bit uncouth after deliberation. But still doesn't detract from the fact that he has won almost every critics award (even the Womnen Film Critic circle gave him the win).

Casey Affleck is the frontrunner and he will win the Oscar.
