Gin bottle routine

What was the deal with Denzel tapping the bottom of the gin bottle a couple of times before he opened it, then pouring a bit out before he started drinking?

It's an old tradition to pour out a little liquor for the brother who have murdered and falsely incarcerated at the hands of white folks, which was a lot back then, but then again not too much different then today.

I asked my grandpa, he said it was common practice in the black community he called it knocking the poison off. It was more of a superstition thing that the top part of alcohol was poisoned.
