You folks have no idea what you just saw...

...this movie is brilliant. Genius and subtle. What you most likely saw as an angry black man abusing son and wife is actually a story of diluting anger and entitlement. It's also not about forgiving mean people. Its about learning to cope with the hands that are dealt and taking the best of whats already inside you. A family portrait of getting rid of resentment. If anything, it is telling black folk, to accept what had happened and learn to extract the good.

No, it offers a universal message that applies to people of all walks of life.

I mean, it should. But it seems that most of the people who didn't understand this movie are white. I think even if you weren't raised by a man as egocentric as Troy, everyone has some sort of issues with their parents. We don't want to live in their shadow and yet we want their respect and support. We wishe we'd been raised differently, but also recognize we wouldn't be who we are without the idiosyncrasies and struggles in our childhood. When it comes to family, sometimes you have to take the 'crookeds with the straights'.

Wildcattin'...Wildcattin'. Pow! I'm gonna go.

That high horse must be making you dizzy to assume everyone that saw the movie didn't get it. Really tired of holier than thou fans like you

Fair enough.

I was sort of agreeing with the OP, at least based on the reactions of the people around me.

Two walked out halfway through. There were four people behind me. One guy complained that there was "too much talking" while his wife/girlfriend said, "Yeah, not enough scenery." I overheard the adjacent couple say to each other, "I don't get where this is going" and then one of them alternated texting with talking.

I won't go as far to say that no one "got it", but there were definitely some folks who completely missed it

Just saw it...I'll never forget it. The end of that movie was truly moving to me.
