Can People Actually Read The Play?

Can people criticizing the movie before seeing it actually read August Wilson's play? It's a wonderful play and shows how the father deals with how his life has gone and how it affects his family. Please just don't hate this movie before reading it or actually seeing it because of preconceived notions and prejudice.

Agree! Having taught students this play for twenty years, I am looking forward to the movie version. Though I suspect the meaning of the title will be lessened with additional characters and that singular front yard setting. Troy builds the fence to keep the world out as Rose wants the fence to keep loved ones in.

I am looking forward to seeing it as well. It will be really interesting to see what happens in the movie.

I've never read the play and just saw the movie and it was amazing. The acting is incredible, barely recognized Denzel Washington. It's a long movie, yet it didn't feel long, that's how engrossing it was -- at least to me.

It is a great play and it is good that it is finally getting made as a film. The play itself had no white characters in it, by the way and was just Troy and his family. And do you know who played the role of Troy originally? James Earl Jones, that's right-the voice of Darth Vader.

I saw the original with James Earl Jones years ago.

I have seen 7/10 of the plays that are called "The Pittsburg Cycle" by August Wilson and also saw JEJ playing Troy in the original play in NYC. Movie is very true to the play itself and the book it is based on.

With all the talk about this film I am hoping more of Mr Wilson's works will eventually come to the screen as they are all more than worthy of a film adaptation.

As far an never hearing about this piece or the playwright himself, I think (??) you would have had to be a theatre goer to know of his work. There is now a theatre named after him on Broadway.

I've never seen, ready, nor heard of the play before. I simply saw the movie because of the trailer and who was in it
