Adapted Screenplay credit for August Wilson

The late and great August Wilson obviously wrote this complex dissection of damaged souls and life's tribulations for the stage. What I would love to learn more about is how he could earn an "Adapted Screenplay" credit when he died more than a decade before the film was released.

Can someone please shed some light on this for me?

It's my understanding that he wrote a screenplay before he died and they used it. I don't know if I believe that though. It felt like they used the original text from the play.
