Can I enjoy this movie even if I'm not into sports?

This movie looks like a good drama so I might like to see it. That being said, I'm not much of a sports guy at all. Baseball I can kind of appreciate on an aesthetic level. I might enjoy seeing a game - especially live in person - once in a great while. But that's about as far into it as I get. I don't follow any teams. Basketball is about the same way for me.

Football is worse though. I have no interest in watching or following football at all.

So my question is: would my lack of interest in sports hamper my enjoyment of this movie? I'm guessing the drama and the characters are the main thing. You have to build a story around something concrete, and the fact that it's sports in this case might be largely incidental. Am I right?

I like plays, I like period dramas, I appreciate fine acting, and I like the 1950's.

BTW if you're curious, I am indeed a straight male. But somehow I have always seemed to be lacking whatever gene makes guys avidly interested in sports!

based on this you should likely check it out

a few baseball sports names are briefly thrown about but you really don't need to know anything about them to enjoy the movie imo

The film isn't about sports per se, it's about a man who's bitter about the fact that racism prevented him from achieving a successful career in baseball. But even so, it's peripheral to the substance of the film.

Yeah, other than the fact its about a man who was never allowed to play sports professionally just because of the color of his skin, sports doesn't figure too much more into the plot. And if you like great acting, this movie is one of the best you'll see.

Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!

Actually he didn't get to play baseball because he was too old after he got out of prison, around 34 or 35 years old.

The majority of the movie was set how long after he got out of prison? How old's Troy supposed to be in the movie?

I ask because up until 1946 baseball was totally segregated with (white) baseball and the Negro leagues. In 1947 Jackie Robinson, who's mentioned in the movie, and Larry Doby, first started playing in the majors and it wasn't until the late 50's that there were a similar number of Negros and whites playing in the majors.

So depending on Troy's age in the movie and the timelines of when the movie's exactly supposed to take place - ?somewhere in the mid-50's? - it could be a combination of both some racism and his age why he didn't get to play baseball.

Sports has very little to do with the movie, its almost trivial.

lol, what a question.

This film/play has zero to do with sports.
