is Lyons Troy's son from an earlier marriage? Rose and Troy are married for 18 years or so and Lyons is 34. I don't seem to recollect that it was mentioned anywhere.

I initially didn't think good of Lyons after seeing the first scene when was asking for $10, but later on, I considered him to be one of the best characters portrayed

Yes, Lyons is his son by his first wife.

Yes. When Lions and Denzel are going around and around about the $10, he says "boy your mama did a hell of a job raising you". Plus he calls his step-mom by her name, "Rose".

You're right. Calling Rose by her name gave me that suspicion while watching the movie.

Troy said in the movie that he met Lyons mom a few years after his father kicked him out and he ended up going to prison because he was robbing people to feed his family. He didn't say they got married though,

Lyons got busted for check fraud and had to serve time, so I wouldn't say his character was an honorable one. I would've liked to see Troy's reaction to that news, since he got busted when he was still alive.

At the end, when Lyons was sitting at the table in the kitchen, I felt dread for Rose. I wonder if his thievery is going to be a problem for her down the line.

Sure, I agree that he was a fraud. When I said one of the best characters, I meant the love he shared with his family in the later part of the movie.
