So let me get this straight...

Callie manipulated the machine/photos to fix her relationship with her boyfriend, but didn't seem to have any problem screwing his best friend on the side?

Seems legit.

reply

That bizarre revelation remi
ally wrecked the movie IMHO.

Think of it more like this: one room mate saw a way to give himself betting tips to fix his "losing streak"...Ally saw it as a way to fix her relationship "losing streak" in the same way. The only other thing she had to do in addition was hide her past mistakes that just happened to be caught in film.

What I'm saying is, someone who is rampantly cheating on their boyfriend (she screwed the best friend multiple times), has already checked out of the relationship and doesn't care anymore. So why would she go through this incredibly convoluted and complex scheme for someone she didn't love anymore?

reply

I thought this was a very interesting revelation.
Callie had pretty much given up on her boyfriend because he was a do nothing dud, artists block for his paintings and his relationship.

But the hint of a possible affair ignited jealousy in him.
The excuse that they were just playing for the camera also gave them a pretext to forgive the affair.

Now she has a boyfriend who is actively engaged in his relationship.
Now she has something to fight for.

reply

She did. She wanted to get caught. She wanted Finn to realize he was losing her and to fight for her instead.

reply

She did not love him. She was screwing someone else. Cheating is the opposite of love. You cannot love someone and cheat.

If the affair happened months ago, how come Jasper didn't recognize the photo she planted of them on the couch as something that already happened?

reply

I think you're wondering why Jasper didn't realize that the picture of Callie and him having sex in front of Finn was from the past and not the future. While we could blame the drugs he's taking with his new-found winnings, it's also possible Callie and he had sex there more than once (Finn's sleeping presence optional). Since he'd already gone through with kissing Callie in Finn's presence, he might just have thought they were going to have to take it to that extent. Because they have to do what the camera shows.

I doubt he really thought to look at it and consider the details well enough to realize is was from the past. Since they didn't find that photo on the wall, he might have just ruled out it was an old photo, thinking they'd seen all the old ones already. He didn't know Callie had hoarded a bunch.

reply

Same with the boyfriend, it was his way of ending his artist block, another "losing streak" of sorts. Nice catch.

By the way, I am right behind you.

reply

She had the affair because Finn and her drifted due to Finn's complacency which hurt her. Its not an excuse to have an affair--but she didn't have the affair because she didn't love him anymore, she had it because she was hurt, bitter, insecure, etc. Doesn't excuse any of it but actually it is possible to have sex but still love your boyfriend. As most people know, sex can literally just be sex. No feelings, no emotion, and possibly even no sexual satisfaction. She probably felt guilty but also "justified" in her actions because Finn was so "not present" in the relationship for so long. And she was angry about it. But she loved him and wanted it to work.

reply

We'll have to agree to disagree then. I don't believe you can cheat on someone and still love them. Sex is just sex, but it's cheating and hurting the other person who you're supposed to be monogamous with. Loving someone does not include cheating, I'm not sure what universe exists in which that's the case.

reply

Very naive

reply

So much this.

There is a lot more that goes into the complexities of a relationship than black or white 'rules'. Plus, not all people are wired the same way. Honestly she acted like a really bad example of a girlfriend several times throughout the film way before we knew she was doing the deed with the crack head. If anything she was the most consistent character in the film we were just seeing her as she wanted us to see her. In the end, She just happened to be a really manipulating and morally void person. Taking the ring off her finger pretty much showed Art Boy got a clue. Great moment in the film.

But having sex with one person absolutely does not mean you have destroyed the love you felt for another. Not only is it unrealistic, it also completely invalidates the idea of Poly-relationships. However, it is entirely possible for SOME PEOPLE to love more than one person and not have it affect the whole. It's also possible for two (three, four) people to have "just sex" while remaining devoted to another (Open relationships. Real thing.). In other words, we're all a little more complex than you're giving credit for.

reply

Agreed, a lot of people can separate love and sex. There are so many situations. If a man loves his wife, but she is in a coma or something, and he needs to have sex, and visits a prostitute, has he stopped loving his wife?

Absolutely not - but situations can be complex.

She slept with the friend 'cause she was mad at the botfriend for not coughing up a ring, and for growing detached from her.

This was actually my biggest problem with the film (Jasper's inexplicable and rapid descent from being no worse than a bit louche, to becoming a serial killer, was a close second).

Why's the one female character gotta be a wedding-mad loony, whose every decision in life revolves around this one guy loving her or not loving her, and marrying her or not marrying her?

I figure the writer must have some serious issues with women, but it still bugged. It's such a lazy, stupid stereotype.

Glad someone said it..

The cheating happened "before before". She wasn't still screwing Jasper after the camera was found.
Thing is, she might have fixed everything had the cop not swung by.
