shareAs I mentioned in another post. I believe he was addicted to gambling. His gambling choice was dog races. He most likely needed a bookie because he got banned from betting at the race track. Most likely from losing and not being able to pay.

Bookies exist in areas where betting is illegal, many US states don't have race tracks. Race tracks (and casinos) only take cash up front for some strange reason :) share

Yeah, I used to live near the border to another state, and we would would drive 30 minutes to the dog races there. I don't like losing money so I didn't go often!

Some people prefer bookies because the return is higher, taxes aren't withheld, and just convenience.
Obviously. One big win, no one is the wiser. Winning all those small bets was stupid and attracted the wrong kind of attention.
