Accents by Scotty and Chekov were way over the top

Seemed desperate. The accents were so grossly exaggerated it really takes you out of the story. We get it, Simon Pegg is supposed to be Scottish and Anton (all respect and RIP) is supposed to be Russian. Why oversell it so much?

They are just trying to match what people remembered from the TV series.

It's true to the characters.

And whilst it wasn't his typical accent, Anton Yelchin actually was Russian.
