TV episode stretched into movie
Kirk's crew answer a distress call from some people we've never heard of, to rescue them from another group of people we've never heard of. That would be a serviceable conflict of the week for a filler episode in a Star Trek TV series, but Star Trek movies should be "bigger" than that. They need to be about important events defining the main characters, or interactions with the quintessential aliens of the ST universe. This movie should have finally had the new series focus on ST's definitive group of aliens: the Klingons!
