Outrage over Sulu Being Gay

I've seen several people on these boards irate over the fact they have Sulu as a gay man in the future.

You should not be upset about that...unless you're just a homophobe and then, well, that's your cross to bear.

You should be upset about the lazy writing of the character. I could care less but its ridiculous having Sulu be gay in this incarnation of Star Trek for two reasons. A. No one asked for it (not even original Sulu, George Takei) and B: Its a throwaway scene and has zero bearing on the plot or on Sulu's motivations in the film. It was just something so the producers could say "look how enlightened we are to the plight of the LGBT community." Hooray for you.

Contrast this with the incredible step Rodenberry took casting a black female as a major character on the original show. She was not just window dressing. She was well-written and integral to each show's plot. They gave her weight and honor without it being just about a black character. Sulu's sexual orientation in Star trek Beyond had the feel of "look he's gay, we are so cool. Now back to the Sci-Fi." Its just lazy and hypocritical. If you wanted to make him gay, then make that have some kind of bearing on the character. I'm not saying I would have done that, but I also would not have just given a nod to a character's sexual orientation in such a flippant and insignificant way. It brought nothing to the movie or the character.

My memory foam pillow says it can't remember my face. I can tell its lying.

Actually, Uhura wasn't written very well in TOS. All she did for most episodes was sit at her post and say things like "Incoming messages, Captain." Her actress and the writers later deplored her lack of development. However, the fact that a black female in a fairly high rank was there at all, was a very important step in the right direction.

However, Takei was right that making Sulu gay, and having that element be blink-and-miss-it, was lazy and dumb. Sulu was established as straight in TOS. The movie should have made another character gay in a way that did not contradict established series parameters.

This.

"Can you keep a secret? Can you know something and never speak of it again?"

I have yet to watch the original series but I have read comments by many long-time fans who say that the original Uhura really did not do very much in the original series, and that this alternate Uhura in the reboot actually has more to do in these new movies and has better characterisation.

I also think the outrage over Sulu being gay in the movie is quite silly and ridiculous, especially since this little detail about Sulu's homosexuality was so subtle and insignificant in the actual movie itself and it only amounted to a few seconds in total of screen-time. That scene was very easy to miss if you don't pay attention, and it wasn't so obvious either, if you didn't know any better, you probably would think that they were Sulu's brother and niece instead.
