Three films in......all very similar.

Three movies into the JJ universe, and all three movies are very similar.

All three movies share the following themes or scenes:

* A villain with a beef with Star fleet.
* Action sequence with Kirk, flying through outer space or zero g.
* Someone hanging off a ledge.
* Earth / or space station that lets face it may as well have been earth directly under threat.
* Villain defeated in a fist fight.

The original TV series and the movies had much more varied plots, featuring space gods, time travel, deep space exploration, political intrigue, philosophy, the relationship between Kirk, Spock and Bones - it's what set Star Trek apart from other sci-fi - big ideas to me, were the very core of what Star Trek was about - (and yes I know there was plenty of action and fist fights too.) I just wish Nu-Trek would explore these ideas too, instead of just relying on action and explosions.

Every single one is a revenge film.

"Can you keep a secret? Can you know something and never speak of it again?"

Why these films have been *beep* because they all do the exact same thing over and over again. And all the villains are all super angry who wants to see the Federation destroyed because they want 'vengeance'. Its the same plotline over and over and all of them want revenge over something the Federation itself is barely responsible for.

I realize I'm in the minority, but I really enjoyed Into Darkness. Specifically Cumberbatch's performance. I found Beyond to be the least entertaining for me, and definitely agree that after a third go round a lot of the tropes feel very much like a retread.

Still I can't lie, if they make a fourth installment I'll be there opening night ready to go!

The Abrams trilogy is just generic space operas with Star Trek characters shoehorned in.
