Good but story better suited for TV Episode.

It just seemed to lack the right conflict or "World Teetering on Destruction" sense of urgency that usually accompanied the feature films. The story centered on a "Mcguffin" that Idris Elba's character wanted for some sort of weapon ...I think. Also despite the fact I didn't recognize Idris in his makeup that ISN'T a curve ball compliment to the makeup dept. either..as even the "villains" prosthetic masks looked cheap and left over from episodes of Deep Space 9. Why JJ didn't take a que from his "other franchise" and have the visual effects dept make some of the Aliens "less human" is beyond me as Aliens walkin in background seemed overtly Humanoid. I mean the budget was $185 million and honestly I don't see where it was spent. $185 million is a GARGANTUAN amount of $$ and they couldn't have the Aliens look more...I dunno "Alien?" Sorry to grumble on but to me even the dialogue frequently didn't "work" and seemed preachy. Their female Alien friend uses English phrases like: " if you choose to do this your on your own" but doesn't know what a "welcome mat" is? OK...Maybe I'm being a lil too picky as she did like Public Enemy. Overall script seemed rushed...Love the cast and ...Oh..That's another thing..The fact Anton Yelchin (Chekov) had passed away tragically prior to the films release unfortunately layered a melancholy blanket everytime he was on screen. Such a shame. Overall a 4 outta 10. ..And what was with Sulu being gay? Not that there's anything wrong with that mind you...but it just seemed to come out of nowhere with zero mention in the previous films. I heard even George Takei was less than pleased with that character decision. Anyway I hope ST4 happens just with a better story and NOT nessecarily more CGI; one of the most beloved films in the franchise was Part 4 The Voyage Home, taking place in modern day San Francisco and imho the BEST of ALL the films. We shall see. Fingers crossed.

It did have the feel of a TV episode, much like Insurrection. But Insurrection didn't just feel like a TNG episode, it felt like a mid-season throwaway episode. Beyond at least had the high stakes and consequences of a Star Trek film, or at least season finale. Though it's not often you see an Enterprise destroyed. And when the film finally did reveal the overall evil plan there was that World/Worlds Teetering On Destruction urgency and action you'd expect of a feature film. It just takes so long to get to that point because you get the battle near the beginning (which is cool) and then for a big chunk of the movie they're stranded on the planet and there's not much mention of the serious threat ahead. I thought the Aliens looked pretty crappy too, and I thought the whole sucking life energy thing was dumb. They should have made it something to do with the atmosphere of the planet which had mutated them or whatever, because the life draining was corny and I don't even understand how it's supposed to work. It had a lot of good things though, I don't enjoy any of these new movies as much as the original 10 (except Insurrection) but I do find them entertaining. So even for all the problems I still found it a good watch.

Good point on the "World in Danger" plot device how it WAS there but too little too late. Just sorta surprising they'd green lit this particular draft of the script when considering the WEALTH of material at their disposal. From the countless story pitches they could have chosen..The Star Trek Canon from which to explore..and also the fact they weren't beholden in this third film with any previous incarnation "cloud" hovering over them(the 1st film being the FIRST FILM in the reboot & 2nd obviously "KHAAAN") so they could be free to REALLY do something unique or amazing. My hunch is paramount knew they had a mediocre story going forward but wanted to cash in on the $$ A Force Awakens generated with their "JJ connection"...Not the JJ from the Jefferson's mind you but based on ST Beyond's GRO$$ Paramount woulda had nothing to lose askin for THAT JJ's input as well! lol I'm a huge Simon Pegg fan...HotFuzz, Shaun of the Dead, World's End, all he had a hand in writing ..But perhaps comedy is his forte and not (at least not currently) Space Opera Sci Fi Action Dramas. I mean
what was with that whole Motorcycle sequence?? lol Hey, @least we got to hear some Beastie Boys at the end...so it wasn't all bad. lol

I didn't think the motorcycle scene was that bad, but I'm mixed about the Beastie Boys scene. It's a cool action scene and the idea of pulling a plan out of their butt to use an audio wave or something to disable their enemy is very Trek-ish. It's just a little jarring to hear a Beastie Boys song not just in a Trek film (like in the first movie) but prominently used in the climax. Plus I found the execution a little cheesy with the foot tapping and the like. I didn't know what to expect from Pegg as a writer, and I still don't know what to think as I'm not sure what parts of the movie were his work. He always struck me as more of a Star Wars guy, so while I loved him as Scotty I wasn't sure about him actually writing. As you said, I knew he could write comedy but a Star Trek movie? It could have been worse.

I enjoy new Trek movies, but IMO their biggest problem is that they ALL feel like big-budget TV episodes with villain-of-the-week. There's no sense of a grand saga, continuity, galaxy-reaching consequences, high stakes etc. that Star Wars main movies have (heck, even Rogue One). The viewers are not leaving the theatres dying to know what will happen next. As much as everyone hates cliffhangers and unresolved plots, they obviously exist for a reason. So honestly, I'm not that surprised new movies are not expanding the audience with each sequel.

And it doesn't hep at all that it takes them 3-4 years to make a new one. This is not 20th century anymore, attention span of the public is shorter than ever with more entertainment options than ever. Not good especially for a franchise that never was a box office juggernaut. Movies used to be able to afford long breaks between sequels, as could music stars, but it's changed. Each of the new ST movies is a decent/good effort, but there's lack of a larger plan, ambition and a bigger picture unfortunately to compete with biggest 1+ billion blockbusters

I'm pretty certain about this movie was them trying to make it more like the original series than the Abrams movies.
