Why was Bones going through Chekov's locker?

I thought maybe sharing a whisky between Kirk and McCoy with his being the unlifted glass at the table was perhaps a nod to Anton Yelchin's death. However later, at the party before credits, we hear Chekov say how whisky is a Russian invention...

...which would mean the other glass was for Kirk's dead father...

...so why was Bones going through Chekov's locker? 

My bestestest funny evah!!! https://vid.me/ToVD

That bugged me too, Bones just stole his property. What the hell man?

Only dream I ever have is it the surface of the Sun. Every time I shut my eyes it's always the same.

Chekov must have a reputation among the enterprise crew that he had some of the best drinks on the Enterprise.

reply

Well, it doesn't mean you should just be rifling through his stuff and taking it, lol.

reply

Add me as someone else confused by the line. Why was Bones in his locker? Why not have it a gift from Chekov if they wanted the Russian gag? I seriously don't get the purpose of him stealing from Chekov in that scene.

because PRODUCT PLACEMENT

reply

Because McCoy wanted to have some great liquor and figured that if anyone would have great liquor, it'd be Chekov. A lot of Russians are fond of alcohol, and who else on that ship would have great liquor ?

reply

Agreed, I swung from understanding it was a toast to the late Anton, to just being confused!

darker than biscuit, lighter than oak

reply

And he was just so casual about it as well. Hey, I just stole this from our crew mate, that'll teach him to have things I want.

reply

Yeah, sounded like theft to me and I didn't like it.

reply

because, judging by his scene with Spock later, it's apparent that McCoy cannot mind his own business.
