Justin Lin did a fantastic job.

I was highly skeptical and disappointed when I discovered Justin Lin was
taking the helm. I wanted J.J. Abrams to return. I greatly despise
the Fast films and thought Beyond would have similarities that would make
it recognizable as a Justin Lin film. I'm thrilled this wasn't the case. Sure,
we don't need him anywhere near Star Trek 4 (or any sci-fi film); but he's
proven that he can take the reins from an up and coming sci-fi genius
(Abrams) and not destroy it. I'm boggled out of my ming why the baton
was passed to Lin.

I agree he did good with the movie.
I admit going in I thought he'd ruin it completely but I'm happy to be wrong.

reply

I have my fingers crossed that he stays away from ST4, far away.
I'm not a fan of those Fast films.

Roberto Orci was supposed to make his directorial debut using a script he penned. Deep into preproduction, he backed out or was let go. For those who didnt know, Orci and Alex Kurtzman were the dynamic duo who wrote the previous two Star Trek films and many other big tentpole films. JJ Abrams entrusted the task to Orci, since he was too busy with Star Wars 7. The production was a mess and had to be salvaged. Basically, they started all over from scratch. Lin did a decent job with what was presented to him, but the film in the theaters is far different from what was originally planned.

reply

Do you know by any chance how the movie was supposed to look like originally ? I enjoyed Beyond but thought the narrative structure was a little bad, too straightforward and predictable, maybe that is a result of what you described

reply

If rumors are correct, the Orci script might be used in Star Trek 4.

The story was good and the performances from the cast were excellent, but some of Justin Lin's cinematographic choices weren't too hot. Some scenes were lit too darkly, others featured choppy, shaky cam (which I personally cannot stand).

Overall Star Trek Beyond was a very good sci-fi/action movie, but if there's a weak spot in the film it was Justin Lin.

Justin Lin dos a great job
It was the script writing from Pegg which was the weak link. The Beastie Boys gimmick is straight amateur writing from Pegg

Well since Pegg and Joung were ST fans they at least made a script that finally appealed to Trekkies. Can't have everything at once, as it seems. Besides the relative lack of twists in the story, I thought it was good enough.

After ST 4 i would like to see Justin Lin to helm a reboot of The Next Generation

If you want a anime thats close to Star Wars, then check out Legend of the Galactic Heroes!

reply

I seriously doubt he'll be invited back to do another one, and at this point, another seems in doubt. Film is tracking to do about 100 million less than Into Darkness. Most of the difference appears to be U.S. Most of the blame should go to J.J. Abrams, who was more focused on Star Wars fthan he was Star Trek. Lin's name is who is listed as the director, so he'll take the blunt of most of the blame, even though he was hired at the last minute.

Because he's always been in charge of the project.

I disagree, the cinematography at times was great but was noticeably weak in places, especially in the sequence with Kirk and Chekov sneaking back on board the wreck of the Enterprise. The lighting was atrocious, and in places the shaky cam and jump cuts were nauseating on the big screen. Now that may have been a 2nd unit scene and Justin Lin may have had little to do with it (which would make sense seeing as how the rest of the movie was quite well filmed with a few exceptions) but it stuck out like a sore thumb as being below average cinematic quality, and whomever directed it did a poor job.

That said I really enjoyed the movie a lot, and it's my favourite of the new reboot/remake stuff. The script was pretty good, it was a fine balancing act of a lot of characters and had some nice humour and dialogue in it while always moving the story forward and never featured a dull moment. It may have been a little immature for Star Trek, and didn't feature much depth nor much exploration of the human condition, which I would say is normally the keystone of Star Trek, but for an action/adventure movie set in space it was well designed and presented while staying true to the "spirit" of Star Trek and more or less to the characters as well. Also I really liked the Beastie Boys scene, to my surprise because it really shouldn't have been as good as it was! It's silly stuff but was appropriate and fun. That's my take on it.

Are you serious?? This is by far the worst Star Trek movie ever(with the exception of The Final Frontier maybe?)
The "altered timeline" movies are going down rapidly, the first one was kind of great (the opening scene with Kirk's father gave me a real hard one), the second one was only just OK and you knew it was only going to get worse when they announced that J.J. wasn't going to direct the third one, and here we are, the franchise has been ruind and God only knows what garbage we will be forced to watch in the fourth one! Unless ofcours they give the direction back to someone who knows what he's doing, someone who actually likes the whole Star Trek mythology maybe? I'm all for Nicholas Meyer, he made the best Trek movie ever (The Wrath Of Kahn) so why not put him at the helm again to save this sinking ship?

this was my favourite by a long way!(of the new ones)

he did ok. I did like the new concept on warp speed travel. although I must say he needs some work on the camera stability. the first few minutes of the film caused me some problems due to constant shakiness of the camera.

On a visual level it was an amazing job. But the screenplay... It is really just a pile of ideas leading from action sequence to action sequence, which is more than enough for the average event movie, but leaves a lot of Star Trek's potential unused.
The sloppy unoriginal writing and lack of inner logic felt mind-numbing in places. This movie did not push the franchise forward a bit but simply cashed in on it imagery to adapt the Fast franchise to the science fiction genre.

I was entertained, but this was hardly a 7.

reply

True but the criticism of the screen play are on Simon Pegg. Given the script he had to work with, Justin Lin did a great job

reply

I thought he did a great job.

If it's all the same to you, I'll have that drink now.-Loki (Marvel's Avengers)

reply

He did, this was Star Trek through and through! I was worried about him moving the Trek franchise closer to FF genre and the trailer with the "sabotage" only had me worried more, but this movie was amazing. I was actually smiling at the scene where camera is panning across Yorktown only to end up at the bay as Enterprise was docking and have the music end, I was thinking: "Wow, this is Star Trek, no doubt about it." Sure it had couple of cheesy lines and/or scenes but what Trek movie (or episode for that matter) didn't?

reply

The directing was good. Script writing from Pegg could have been better

He did a great job......I loved the movie over all too.
