Man, some badly timed posts today about how it was gonna get canceled for SURE.
My own feeling was that if they'd keep The Americans (a show I have never cared about) for six seasons, they'd certainly keep this for four. In both cases, finishing the story serves their long-term goals.
Totally fine with this. I'm a big fan of shows announcing their end in advance.
Kind of surprised though, as they'd always said five seasons. But, I'm fine with it, there were three books, I felt like three seasons would've been sufficient. But they said they're still on the second book. In parts. In some ways, the Season 2 finale matched the end of Book 2. That, and the shortened third (and presumably fourth) season makes this unsurprising to me. They'd rather end it a season sooner instead of stretching it out too much.
Plus, shorter seasons and advanced end dates mean less filler, which is good.
They've been saying four seasons for some time now. Originally they said five, but the ratings weren't strong enough, and there was too much risk of not finishing the story. As of last season, they were talking about four.
shareI think they can tie it together in four. It'll keep them focused.
Five, as originally planned, might've been dragging it out a bit. Even now there's a bit of filler.
four is enough.
If they took out all the worthless Zack and Epp garbage, and the two Mexicans, the series could have wrapped in 3.
The season 2 finale was no where near what happened in the end of book 2. The season 3 finale is titled "The Fall", and that should be an adaptation of what happens at the end of book 2. Keep reading if u want to know what happens at the end of book 2.
Spoiler****
The Master, with the help of Palmer, is successful in killing the other 6 Ancients and their Sun Hunters by nuking their original birth sites around the world. Setrakian, Silver Angel, Eichhorst and Palmer all die. The nuclear blasts causes a nuclear holocaust around the world giving vampires about 20 hrs of no sunlight each day, allowing them all to exist on the surface. The vamps essentially get a huge win and the only ones left to fight are Fet, Ephraim, Gus and Quinlan. Book 3 starts off pretty damn dark if u can imagine.
The dropoff in teh quality of the program sure didn't help things.
I would have thought that Corey Stoll's new "hotness" in Hollywood would have helped.
But the writing became bland toward the end of last season and now it just seems to cruising along to nowhere.
Bad films are a crime against humanity.

I actually haven't minded the writing in this season so far. Last season really lost me towards the end, and I stopped watching.
The new cast members are better. The councilwoman and the luchador characters have grown on me, though they don't have as many spoken lines as the others and their respective plot lines aren't always great either. The writers don't seem to know what to do with them other than serve as plot devices for Vasily and Gus' characters.
Quinlan is becoming one of the better characters on the show. It was a mistake to kill off all of the turned soldiers because they would have been a really great foil for him.
The young Setrakian still outshines the older version. He would make a great lead character to chase vampires in a spinoff set in Cold War Europe. Sadly, it will never happen.
Some other characters are awful. The police chief sucks. Vasily Fet is OK, but nothing good or new is happening with his character. The soldiers he worked with were much more interesting than he was. Dutch is still not a great character, but she plays better off Eph than Fet or that annoying girlfriend from last season whose name I've forgotten.

There have been several 'original intents,' and it's very rare anybody knows exactly how long a show's gonna run when it starts. Could have been three, could have been five. I'm good with four.

I just got done reading this before I headed to these boards. I will say I am happy to see it will get a 4th season . The creators only wanted it to run for 3 seasons. But they stated that with the amount of story they still had left to tell another season was requested.
I will I am glad they thought about when it comes to the story instead just folding up the tents and getting out of town. So to speak. Every season that I hav watched I have loved I think the 2nd season was the strongest one so far. But to be honest I have not watched a episode from season 3 yet. I have 5 episodes on my DVR and when it they are all on there i will binge on them over a weekend.
After this gone they need to bring on some more horror show like this ....okay maybe not vampires but something. I will miss this show.

At least it will get a proper ending!

DEAR MODS: PLZ REDUCE MY POSTING QUOTA. 30 MIN IS WAY TOO MUCH.
Whew! I truly had a knot in my stomach this morning when I posted the latest ratings. I did say that it require true dedication from FX not to let the fans of The Strain down. Hours later they stepped up to the plate and I for one am very grateful. I do recall J.J. Abrams' 'Revolution' which aired on NBC. After three seasons the network dropped it without a finale, just a cliffhanger never to be continued.
So bravo and thank you, FX. You've done yourselves proud by fulfilling the hopes of The Strain's dedicated fans.
NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO, THERE YOU ARE.
True, says more about the positive qualities of FX than of this show.
The again, for cable it probably makes sense to give it an ending to have a longer tail to cash in, opposed to cancelation, which would give it the aura of a failed show and leave it as an unmarketable stump.
I really don't care how long or short a show lasts I enjoy it while it's on and while it entertains me. A good thing about a four or fie season show is it's more economical to buy all the seasons. Lol
