Because the author describes the feelings of the characters. One paragraph that scared the heck out of me was one character hearing distant screams then silence as he stood outside waiting for the taxi.
shareThat's because when you're reading horror, your own fears and imaginations bring the described images and sounds to life. Watching a movie or a show limits the imagery to to what the writers, directors, and F/X people imagine as scary.
