Flashbacks are proving to be excessive and pointless

This last episode being a prime example. We didn't learn anything new by seeing Gus' backstory. We already knew how he felt about his mother and we already knew he felt guilty about the part he played in bringing the Master to NY. The writers are proving to be pretty lazy. If it doesn't advance the plot or add new dimension in the development of the character then it is unnecessary. They should just keep it in present day and get on with it.

Not every flashback is pointless. The flashback episodes of Abraham/Eichorst/Quinlan are great.

But yes, we don't want to know anything about the past of Gus (or Dutch, or Fet, or Eph, etc). Those flashbacks doesn't add anything important to the story.

I agree not every flashback is pointless. I said they are proving to be pointless, especially the more recent ones. I did enjoy the ones you mentioned.

Definitely becoming a burden. The last few, as you say, were just padding.

I'm beginning to wonder what is the point of gus. I've been waiting to see how he fits into all of this. I'm thinking where he has lost his mum and he feels guilty by the part he played, he will be instrumental in bringing the master down.

padre-brian, i agree 100%. i instantly thought that everything in Gus's flashbacks we already knew. completely pointless filler. if the awesome epic battle sequence hadn't been in this ep the entire thing would have been a lame episode.
