Forgive me if this has already been answered but why was Palmer's dad so horrible to him?

shareIf Palmer wanted to really hurt his heartless father he should have hit him where it hurts.Threaten to dedicate his life to ruining his dads other sons life who he did care about.Thus wiping the smile off his face by telling his dad that he would soon bankrupt him or hire some hitmen to arrange an accidental death.
Im surprised Palmer didn't use his fathers weakness for his other son against him when he visited him in the retirement home.Palmer clearly heard the other old people at his dads table mention that he had another son which implied that he must have been paying daddy visits.
