OF ALL THE RECENTLY CANCELLED...

I just saw a full list of recently cancelled shows from all networks. Of all... AH hit the hardest.

These aren't the 80s. The "one main event per episode" crap doesn't fly anymore. People have many options to watch all episodes at any time they want, so shows with a continuous storyline do better (Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Lost, Prison Break, etc etc).

I was looking forward to this show, but stopped after a few episodes. I want to watch a show, not a series of predictable short movies with a slowly progressing back story.

A crime just happened! They got their first clue, but that will only lead to a series of clues and supposed bad guys and everything will go smoothly for the next 30 minutes. Oh look we are 35 minutes in a 45 minute show. They will catch the real bad guy any minute now.

Just like House. I doubt he ever made a correct diagnosis on his first try, but come the last few minutes of the episode and he nails it. Every time.

Shows like that suck and deserve to be cancelled.

Top Crime Shows:
CSI
SHERLOCK
CSI 2
NCIS
CSI 3
CRIMINAL MINDS
LAW AND ORDER
LAW AND ORDER 2
LAW AND ORDER 3
BONES
HAWAII FIVE O
CASTLE
ELEMTARY

These all follow that "80s" pattern you described. You know what didn't follow the 80's pattern... the top 80's crime show "Miami Vice". They didn't always catch the bad guy, they showed the flaws in the detectives, there was no happy ending.

Nice list of "current" crime shows. The list I provided show a mixture of examples that include new, tenured and successful spin offs as an example of what has worked and is continuing to work for the audience.

reply

Current? Its all time voting shows...

Your precious CSI garbage is ranked 95 on the list...

The fact that something "works" and people watch it says nothing about the quality. There are a lot of idiots watching "reality" tv. Doesn't mean its good.

Do ratings based on IMDb user votes say something about relative quality?

reply

They do. They aren't very reliable or honest in a lot of cases (its mostly 10 and 1 votes), but you get some idea.

And to make a small correction: a lot of people watching does say something about the quality as well, but it says more about the stupidity of the public (especially the ones that actually still watch TV).

Top Crime related shows on IMDb:
...
... 6. Fargo

BTW, it is also interesting to consider numbers of votes:

At the time of this reply, Fargo has a weighted-average rating
of 9.1, arithmetic mean 9.0. The number of votes is 64009
(of which 8879 are from users claiming to be in the US).

Meanwhile, Dexter (which is not on the short list you posted)
has a weighted-average rating of 9.0, arithmetic mean 8.9.
The number of votes is 392814 (of which 64760 are from
users claiming to be in the US).

(The vote counts I quoted were current when I posted,
but of course they might change by the time you read this.)

(I'm not posting as a "fan".
I've never watched Dexter or Fargo.)

reply

Im not getting your point. I only posted top 6 because after that it gets mixed with animated shows, which can't really compare.

And yes, newer shows and movies do have better ratings, but it tends to stabilize after a while.
