Too many flashbacks

It’s jarring. Instead of just telling a story, the show focuses too much on how they’re going to tell a story. It’s confusing. How did Amy Adams sister die? Amy Adams friend was murdered? When? How many murders has there been? And who are they? Who the hell is everyone?

Random flashbacks are annoying.

I wish I could pinpoint when it became such a thing but nonlinear storytelling is pretty much getting to the point where its undermining the ability to deliver a coherent narrative.

I can't quite figure out what's made it so popular. Is it the relentless analysis by the Internet that's driving writers and directors to tell the most cryptic story they can? Or is it some kind of overindulgence in high-tech editing technology that allows directors to not even know their own story structure until they piece it together in the editing suite?

I was wondering if it was just me who sees this more often now - because I normally do not like it at all........................I agree with everybody on this thread, and I'm really glad I bailed on this show after two episodes.

reply

Agree! It’s like a story told thru subliminal messaging. I’d like to read a copy of her newspaper articles to figure out what is going on. What happened in that nasty woodshed? Who are the newspaper couple she keeps calling? The editor’s wife (?) just stands there with an “I told you so” look on her face, but why?

I commented on a thread here by the second show, saying the flashbacks and the images for shock value was actually hurting the premise of the show..People said that it was necessary to do this..I think this may have been a book as well.
One question,,,, Is the husband of Adora the biological father of the sister that died, and Amma? Who is Camilles father?

reply

I don’t know if he is their bio Dad. Last show he said “I lost a daughter too” but he could have been talking about a stepchild. He is strange and would be suspect no 1 if not for the other even more strange people.

Thanks for the reply Entwickler... I thought he was talking about Adoras daughter who died, and meaning he is also grieving, even though she acts like shes the only one dealing with the loss. I think I have to binge watch it all again once its over... Its not good once a week. Especially with all the hidden clues.

Its so confusing...I think Camilles sister died having some sort of seizure in episode one. I think Adora blames Camille. There were two girls killed,,,the one from a year ago, and the one in the windowsill displayed for all to see.

I am mixed up on the husband of Adora.. Is he the father of Amma, and the sister that died? Who is Camilles father?
